About this listen

A child died in an avalanche, and she won’t leave me alone.

A woman plagued by blood-draining mosquitoes on the Alaskan tundra figures out a horrific way to scratch her unending itching.

There’s something outside my tent…and I think it’s hungry.

A collector of rare tropical fish receives a new fascinating and terrifying species.

Dread—Thousands of people have gone missing out in the wild and here is a collection of tales that offer up some horrifying reasons why. Emmy-award-winning National Geographic cinematographer Kevin Bachar has swum with sharks, climbed the peaks of mountains, and explored the darkest of forests. In Dread, he weaves together terrifying true stories from his real-life adventures with twisted fiction from the depths of his frightening imagination. Listen and indulge in the dark side of nature—haunted forests, tree demons, monstrous snakes, and a search-and-rescue team terrorized by the ghosts of those they couldn’t save.

Listen... if you dare.

Full disclaimer, I got a free code for this but I really enjoyed this compendium - some genuinely creepy but not tropey horror short stories and beautifully narrated. I'm going to seek out more by the author and narrator , both are a pleasant discovery.

I really enjoyed this

I usually listen to full length novels, but this short story collection was a fun change of pace. I enjoyed the creativity in the variety of stories and how it encouraged my imagination by being transported into a completely different setting and situation with each chapter. Imagining myself in the character’s shoes, most stories were truly evoking dread. The narration was pleasant with a nice, soothing voice.

Dreadfully good

A really good collection of short stories , varying lengths (shortest 1:08 and longest 46:48) and even the shortest story (a drabble – a story of exactly 100 words) manages to provide enough in the limited words it had to work with.
The stories are all very varied, well written and manage to tell a compelling story within a short time. One or two of the longer ones start a little slowly, but they build to a really good ending.

I contemplated reviewing each story, but feel that with such short stories it would spoil something (simply by revealing that something has a good twist or something).

I will say that I enjoyed every story, each for varying reasons (some more than others, but there wasn’t one that I didn’t enjoy).

The narrator (Cheryl May) has a wonderful voice, provides a nice level listening experience with a great range of characterisation where necessary (although these shorter stories are mostly narrative by nature). Very pleasant tone and easy to listen to with excellent enunciation.

Overall, a very good bunch of stories that I will come back to in the future for another listen.

Compelling and very well written
