About this listen

At 22 Julie Barton collapsed on her kitchen floor in Manhattan. She was one year out of college and severely depressed. Summoned by Julie's incoherent phone call, her mother raced from Ohio to New York and took her home. Psychiatrists, therapists and family tried to intervene, but nothing reached her until the day she decided to do one hopeful thing: adopt a golden retriever puppy she named Bunker.

Dog Medicine captures in beautiful, elegiac language the anguish of depression, the slow path to recovery and the astonishing way animals can heal even the most broken hearts and minds.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Not sure. Would depend on if my friend was interested in hearing of how dogs can help people with depression.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Don't have one.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Don't know.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

No. don't enjoy films and didn't enjoy the book enough to want to hear it again.

Any additional comments?

I thought the book was well written but found Julie's voice to be too monotone at the start. I'm not a dog lover so found that element boring, though I'm pleased that the dog helped her with her depression and wonder if she has another one now.

More enjoyable if you love dogs.
