About this listen

Christine Morris has been sent to Edinburgh to attend a conference on the latest in police methodology. There she is tracked down by the Northern Constabulary, Stornoway, Outer Hebrides, who inform her that her estranged mother has been involved in a vehicular homicide and has gone missing.

Reluctantly, Christine agrees to fly up to Stornoway, where her mother was last seen. Her arrival is followed by the suspicious death of one of the islanders. What unfolds is a deepening involvement in the life of the community, an unexpected reconnection with her mother, and a nefarious plot against one of the young princes, who is planning a visit to the island.

While Christine Morris is in Edinburgh for a conference, she learns that her estranged mother is missing and a murder suspect. So begins this Canadian crime writer's well-crafted mystery. Does Your Mother Know is part of Maureen Jennings' Christine Morris Mystery series. Caroline Shaffer's performance is gifted. She handles Scottish accents with aplomb, bringing to life the already vivid characters. Her pacing is gentle and her voice both sweet and earnest. Shaffer is a breeze to listen to, even for 10 hours.

This could have been a good book, but a priggish main character who veers from side to side let it down. The reading was superficially OK, but in different parts of the book, she manages to get Scots, London, Irish and Yorkshire accents mixed up - sometimes mid-conversation.

It is not helped by Scots using terms (realtor?????) that are never heard and an inability of the reader to pronounce every day words or terms. As a simple example, (and I have not read the text) - was Maclean really spelt McCleen? And does she know what a Procurator Fiscal is or how to pronounce it?

The story is really well written and keeps you guessing to the end with lots of twists and turns.

What about Caroline Shaffer’s performance did you like?

The performance was great and she did a supberb job of differentiating the different characters. Although I have to say that a few of the accents were decidedly dodgy.

If you can ignore the mangled attempts at Scottish accents this is a good crime novel. The Scottish island setting gives it a great atmosphere and I thought the pace and characters were just right. I am starting to get used to American narrators struggling with British regional accents, audible has a lot of them, so my tolerance is better than it was. It was worth persevering with this story though.

Despite the awful accents and dreadful pronunciation of the narrator I really enjoyed the story. Such a shame but really ......"Scottish accent?" More Irish with a splash of cockney and brummie. And surely she could have worked out how to pronounce Procurator and Nissan correctly.
I think it says a lot for the story that I persevered until the end. However, I would recommend that you get the book rather than the audible version

I've heard many books narrated by Caroline Shaffer and she's always great, but I have no idea why she was chosen for this one, if I were Scottish I'd be fuming, and even as an Englander it was pretty annoying to say the least.

Mind you she didn't have much to work with, this was so boring that I found myself continually going back to relisten as my mind had wandered onto more interesting things like noticing and removing a cobweb from the ceiling hence I almost gave up. But as this is extremely rare for me (maybe half a dozen books in the last 12 years 🤷🏻‍♀️) I struggled on until the end, then regretted bothering. If I'd paid for this I would have returned, sorry.

I found the story quite ridiculous. It was free but I have still removed it from my library. Such a disappointment as I like the Tom Tyler books by this author.
