Max Weber stellt sich in diesem Werk die zentrale Frage, was die abendländische Moderne so besonders macht und den ihr spezifischen wirtschaftlichen Aufschwung im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert voran trieb. Dabei analysiert er die Ursprünge und Voraussetzungen des Kapitalismus und entdeckt eine bestimmte protestantische Ethik, die zu dieser Zeit in Mitteleuropa und Amerika vorherrschte.

Im Zuge seiner Analyse untersucht er die Ausbreitung des Protestantismus und wie diese den Kapitalismus begünstige. Die protestantischen Puritaner seien dabei zunächst religiös motiviert gewesen. Doch schon bald habe sich der sogenannte “Geist des Kapitalismus” verselbstständigt, welchen Weber in seinem Werk genauestens unter die Lupe nimmt.

Er präsentiert dabei eine Sammlung von spannenden Gedanken und widmet sich einer wichtigen Fragestellung, die auch heute noch extrem relevant ist und Aspekte unseres täglichen Lebens stark beeinflusst. Weber bietet einen faszinierenden Einblick in die Ursprünge des Kapitalismus und erklärt auf verständliche Weise, wie dieser entstand und wie er solche Bedeutung erlangte.
