In der Silvesternacht 1930/31 begann eine Reihe von Eisenbahnanschlägen in Österreich und Deutschland, die sich zunächst als harmlose Streiche tarnten, aber sich später als gezielte Sabotageakte mit wachsender Gefährlichkeit entpuppten – bis hin zu einem Bombenanschlag mit 75 Verletzten. Der Täter wurde schließlich überführt, nachdem seine Spur über Sprengstoff und Zeugenaussagen zurückverfolgt worden war, doch seine wahren Motive – zwischen Geltungssucht, Wahnsinn und Eisenbahnobsession – blieben unklar.
