Summary

This hard sci-fi novel is the sixth book in the Stasis Stories, a series of optimistic tales of technological innovation in the near future. They follow Kaem Seba, a young man with extraordinary math talents. With his friends, he’s come up with a device that allows time to be stopped within limited volumes of space-time.

In this sixth story, the company Kaem, Arya Vaii, and Gunnar Schmidt founded to commercially develop his time-stopping discovery is working with NASA to move into deep space.

Using the space tower from book five, they launch large payloads into orbit to start building a rotating wheel space station and launch a successor to the James Webb Space Telescope. Then, they put a space-launch tower on the moon that’s aimed at sending craft all over the solar system.

Unbeknownst to them, the Haliq, a race of aliens in the Epsilon Eridani system is launching its own ships to the Sol system with the intent of finding more space for their burgeoning population. When they arrive, they’re alarmed to find intelligent beings in the system they’ve come to populate, but their obvious solution is to exterminate the problematic humans.

The aliens have an advanced technology that lets them jump across interstellar and interplanetary space.

But they don’t have stasis....

Brilliant

Regretfully I have never before heard of this author and I ask myself why not?
The storyline was addictive, the concept stretches the imagination and the characterisation was inspired. My only criticism would be that I didn’t get anything else done for days because I had to binge listen, however I happily forgive you

Hmmmm - this is a bit disappointing!

I've really enjoyed the series until this one - it's not terrible but just not as good.

Just a couple of things: (SPOILER ALERT)
The change of narrator - a good reader but not the same! Not the same variation between characters.
From a fledgling romance that moved quite slowly through the previous books to BANG! Married. Kids. 20 years later! Too fast!
I like a good old alien story but the whole thing seems out of place from the previous titles.
It's a bit like a homework written quickly on the bus to school - it ticks a few boxes but just seems rushed to me.
I may bow out of the next one or wait until it's freebee or 2 for 1.

Very slow start. OK, but not as good as the others

I still enjoyed it but I found myself tuning out regularly and having to rewind it to hear the bit I'd missed.
This is partly due to the first half feeling like a fairly dry news article or an extended epilogue to the previous books. It eventually gets going but a lot of it sounds like a very long marketing infomercial for stade.
The other reason I found it harder to keep my concentration is the narration. On the previous books, the narrator has done a good job of giving a unique voice to each character which really helped keep what's happening and who's talking clear. This narrator isn't as good in my opinion and gives everyone the same voice, even the aliens.
I'm on the fence now about getting the last book if it's the same narrator.

Not as enjoyable

Overall I think the story was okay a bit of a curve ball from the prior books & I certainly preferred the previous narrators style and voice but overall it was ok
