Summary

In the wake of a series of unfortunate experiences house-sitting in the Cotswolds, Thea Osbourne, accompanied by her spaniel Hepzibah, is perhaps over-optimistic about the possibilities of her latest assignment – house-sitting for transatlantic reptile breeder Harriet Young. However, yet again, the region’s bucolic charms prove to be more than deceptive, and Thea is thrust once more into the heart of a Cotswolds mystery....

Despite the ease with which Thea’s new assignment in the secluded village of Cranham begins, she soon finds a dark side to the characters she encounters there. From the tragic Donny Davis to the enigmatic figure of Edwina, Thea begins to realise that Harriet Young’s beloved geckoes are not the only cold-blooded creatures at large in Cranham….

A Splendid Rendition of an Engaging Story.

Rebecca Tope's "Cotswold" series of crime novels, featuring Thea Osborne and her faithful dog Hepzie, are a gentle and relaxing listen. Crimes there might be, but we are spared, fortunately, technicolour blood and gore. Scene and characterisation are well drawn; the plots hold the attention despite their being woven into the background material. Indeed, part of their charm is the skillful blending of the main plot with the side-lines.

I have read some of her books, including her earlier series with Drew Slocombe, the undertaker, who appears in two of the other Cotswold stories alongside Thea and Hepzie. They are a good read. However, Caroline Lennon reads them to perfection and thus adds to the enjoyment of the storytelling. She paces her reading to suit the material and her style is admirable. Her diction is very clear, as befits an experienced reader and radio actor.

I would not wish to spoil your enjoyment by outlining the plot. Suffice to say that Rebecca Tope spins an excellent and engaging yarn; Caroline Lennon is out of the top draw and does full justice to story.
