About this listen

Ishmael Jones is faced with a dead body and a missing mummy in this highly entertaining, genre-blending mystery.

“Death shall come on swift wings to whoever desecrates this tomb....”

Ishmael Jones and his partner Penny have been summoned to remote Cardavan House, home of the world’s largest private collection of Ancient Egyptian artefacts, for the unveiling of George Cardavan’s latest acquisition: a bona fide Egyptian mummy.

When a bloodstained body is discovered beside the empty sarcophagus, Ishmael is dismissive of the theory that the mummy’s curse is to blame. Instead, he sets out to uncover the human killer responsible. But how can Ishmael explain the strange, shuffling footsteps that creep along the corridors? Who is playing games with them...and why?

I've not read the previous books so had no idea of who or what Ishmael is, but an entertaining story nonetheless

I loved this book. Sufficient background of the main character is explained in the prologue to suggest there is a lot more to discover. This atmosphere builds and soon the story arrives in the sinister, isolated country pile where the mystery unfolds. I liked the Agatha Christie type characters in and the narrator was excellent. it is exciting and easy to listen to but sufficiently intricate to keep you guessing.
I am in looking for another Simon Green already.

perfect mix

Good story and quite entertaining, even funny in places, however I found the narration awful, grating and sometimes robotic. Another narrator such as Richard Armitage could have taken this audible to a whole new level.

Entertaining

This was the first Simon R. Green book I read and definitely won't be the last. The synopsis describes all you need to know to decide whether or not this will interest you. I'd say if you appreciate murder mysteries - or even just spooky tales in general - then you should add it your library. The plot follows the same pattern as that of Arthur Conan Doyles' Sherlock Holmes mysteries which I also enjoy. It is well paced and never boring, it doesn't use filler to pad out the story, and there aren't long winded pages of unnecessary description in an effort to appear deep and meaningful.

I listened to this over a couple of commutes and it was always very easy to slip right back into the story. The narrator Gildart Jackson was excellent so I'll be looking up other books he has narrated too. A well rounded 5* in my opinion, which I'm relieved at given that the last few books I've listened to from the Plus Catalogue have been rather disappointing.

Well paced, interesting and easy to pick back up!
