Summary

Death is only the beginning in this brutal and bloody post-apocalyptic fantasy about humanity’s next phase.

In pursuit of his abusive father’s approval, Zeke Blackwood pushed himself to the very pinnacle of his chosen obsession. Since childhood, all he’d ever wanted to do was play baseball, and through hard work, discipline, and no small degree of talent, his goal of reaching the major leagues was finally in sight. But then a horrific car accident ruined his arm, eliminating any hope of a professional baseball career.

Consumed by depression, Zeke gave up on his future, preferring to wallow in self-pity. That is, until an opportunity came along for him to prove his worth. When his chronically ill younger brother needed a kidney, Zeke didn’t hesitate to offer one of his own—only to die on the operating table.

But eons later, after Earth has been ravaged by disasters both natural and man-made, Zeke is reborn. Guided by the mysterious Oberon, he soon finds himself in the Radiant Isles, a magical land populated by legendary creatures and horrifying monsters alike. A war rages between good and evil, and Zeke—along with the rest of humanity—has been recruited onto the front lines.

Fully healed from the wounds of his previous life, Zeke battles his way through an army of trolls and other subterranean beings, all the while increasing his skills, improving his strength, and gaining superhuman abilities. Finding allies in Abby, an archer who teaches him about his strange new circumstances, and Pudge, a helpless cub who’s become soul-bonded to him, Zeke must keep collecting victories if he’s to survive in this merciless world.

The first volume of the hit LitRPG fantasy series—with more than 700,000 views on Royal Road—now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!

Slow start but ends well.

I really struggled to get through the first two hours of the story. This almost made me put the book down. I persisted and was pleased to find the story and characters became intresting. After that I couldnt put it down.

Not the absolute top, but good nonetheless

Fairly straightforward progression novel with relatively interesting characters who are introduced in a better way than often is the case. World not too fleshed out unfortunately.

Muderhobo but better

finished it in two sittings, can't wait for the second good progression, It's like a darker, more well-rounded muderhobo

It's definitely a must-read.

Great OP MC LITRPG

Really enjoyed this book. It is more 'believable', grittier but less slapstick murderhobo like story. Well worth the investment.

A hidden gem

I was positively surprised about this unknown audiobook. Very action packed, engaging and with good characters. I recommend it and already bought the second book.

(SPOILER ALERT)

As a small criticism, I would say during the first half of the book, every time Zeke had a realisation or achievement in the troll dungeon, I found it a bit repetitive that the narrator always mentioned his baseball background, and this happened quite often.

Basically was something like:

"He learn to hit with a maze, it was basically like when he did it at baseball"

"He went through a lot of pain, but he learn to handle pain just like in his baseball training"

"He had to be very patient, but he was patient during his baseball games"

You catch the idea. There was a point where every time he mentioned his baseball background I was rolling my eyes.

But I guess is a bit tricky to balance when his whole past life orbited around baseball.

But don't get me wrong, this was a brilliant book. That was just a very small detail that did not took me away from enjoying it.

I recommend giving it a listen. You won't be disappointed.

repetative recapping on steroids

The writer has a bad tendency to repeat himself excessively. Whether this is to meet a certain wordcount or not, i dont know, but it makes this a bit annoying to read/listen to.
Dialogue is somewhat bland and uninspired.

The story in itself is not really that bad, but he could have used half as many words to tell it.

Characters are somewhat whiny and boring, and the reference to baseball overused.
