About this listen

The heart-breaking account of a search for the truth behind the brutal killings that shocked a nation.

On 29 August 2016, devastating news hit the headlines that an entire family was found dead in a rural community. For Jacqueline Connolly, this was a deeply personal and life-shattering tragedy, as she discovered her sister Clodagh, along with her nephews Liam, Niall and Ryan, were killed by their husband and father Alan Hawe.

Here, Jacqueline discloses the circumstances leading up to these tragic events, including Hawe's manipulation and coercive control of her unsuspecting sister.

Her gripping account tells of her family's painful struggle to expose critical failures in the initial garda investigation, as they uncovered the terrible darkness behind Hawe's 'pillar-of-the-community' facade.

Jacqueline also reveals many of the shocking, unpublished findings of the recent Garda Serious Crime Review, details that challenge our understanding of domestic violence and family annihilators, while laying bare a mass murder—Ireland's largest murder-suicide—that was cold-bloodedly planned for a year in advance.

Deadly Silence is both the story of a sister's determination to find truth and justice, and an inspiring personal journey of healing from severe trauma and loss.

The final chapter stood out for me as so important for all women to listen and read. To understand the signs of coercive control and avoid a vile evil and disgusting human in their lives. It’s getting out of control the amounts of deaths. Jacqueline has done a fantastic job with this book . Didn’t think I’d be able for it but it’s outstanding. This book will save lives

No words to describe , such an amazing book .

The search for truth in this book is astounding. I hope it sets the family free. It is very well written and very well read. So much resonated with me and I appreciate the way she explored and put into words the details relating to coercive control. I believe that reading this book will help prevent deaths.

Live your life and be happy you certainly deserve it you have survived so much ❤️

I am in awe and admiration of Jacqueline Connolly and her mother for all they have been through. I am especially in awe of the fight they chose to get the truth out about the reasons why he did it. The love for Clodagh and her boys is so evident and I’m sure Clodagh and her boys are so proud of them both as they look on from the spirit world. A fantastic book and may Jacqueline and her mam be at whatever peace they can be in despite their losses. Blessings and love to them both

A very heartfelt gut wrenching listen

An important book around flaws in the system for the victim’s families. The story is tragic, and Jacqueline’s own story is also so sad, her resilience is wonderful and I wish her and her mother some peace now and that the nature reserve where her sister’s house was will thrive.

The courage of her and her mother.

I write this review in the hope that Jacqueline reads this. I gasped, I cried, it made me angry but hopeful. Jacqueline, you are an amazing person and your experience is one that should be shared as a learning opportunity to try to help others both officially and for women with whom this resonates. I am so sorry for your loss. This book is amazing and really important. Thank you for your honesty, courage and trust.

Courageous, raw, honest and deeply important.

Wow is all I can say. What that family has gone and is still going through is unimaginable. The justice system in Ireland failed them and those early years were crucial to finding the truth. The resilience and fight in Jacqueline and her mam are remarkable. A must listen.
