About this listen

Daphne Westfall is a lady desperate for a future, one that doesn't involve her dark past. On a cold night she receives aid from a mysterious stranger, one who tells her she can change her destiny, as long as she agrees to marry the man who wins her.

The brooding Scottish lord that offers her his name and home is handsome but there's something sorrowful in his eyes that feels all too personal to her....

Lachlan Grant never wanted to be an earl, but fate has been less than kind to him. At the insistence of a friend, he seeks out a bride and comes face to face with a woman who bewitches him instantly.

But they each hold secrets that will haunt them both. With a love blooming delicately between them, will their new found happiness together wilt and fade beneath the frost of the past?

Contains mature themes.

I loved both these wintry stories but the narrator’s relentlessly breathy style got very boring after a while,

Good story - annoying narrator

The superb narration lifts the stories which have good plots but are mawkish and full of holes.
For example, in the second story the maid never puts her mistress to bed.

Lauren Smith is one of my favourite authors. Two stories which move from social disaster to love and happiness. I’m sure you will enjoy both stories

Really enjoyed these two stories! I’ve never read/listened to any Lauren Smith, and I hope they produce more audiobooks. She is a talented writer who doesn’t seem to adhere to most of the character tropes of the genre and freshens up HR storylines. I particularly enjoyed book two, and now I just want it to be the first of a spin-off series. Adelaide and Everett need their own book as does Zadie and... one of Rayne’s cousins maybe? Will Thorne’s performance was sublime. This is the steamiest I’ve ever heard his honeyed tones narrate. It was delightful. Definitely worth the credit! More of this Writer/Narrator collab please!

Sweet duo

Thoroughly enjoyed this but wish I could find the sequel that is hinted at in the epilogue.

An enjoyable listen

How did the readers not laugh when doing this book? Two short stories with such stupid plots must have made them tool eyes. They were really good but hope they get better material in future. Worse, in the first story hatred changes to love in a flash. This after a marriage auction - unheard of in those days. Second story as bad but I didn’t finish it. Sorry but won’t read this author again

Risible plots
