Summary

The Great Fire has reduced London to smoldering embers. From the ashes, thief taker Charlie Tuesday is drawn to investigate a string of strange murders. Mutilated corpses are washing up at Deptford, each marked with a dire astrological prediction. But only London's best crime-solver realizes the killer's deadly offerings will soon unleash a devastating force on England.

With the help of Lily Boswell, a gypsy street-girl with a knife and a grudge, Charlie must find the killer and put a stop to the murders. And by doing so, the Thief Taker will find the man whose terrible destiny is entwined with his, their fates written in the dark stars...

The best one yet in this brilliant series

I encountered the first in the Charlie Tuesday series on Kindle Unlimted and took a punt...which was a great decision. I've burned through the first three in record time and I'm now eagerly starting on the fourth installment.

The previous two installments are smashing and this one is even better. The pace is relentless, seventeenth century London is convincingly realised, the insight into history is compelling and the characterisation is execellent. Although thiswould work as as stand alone novel I really would recommend enjoing Theif Taker and Firecatcher first.

I'msure they make a good read but the narration is SO good I think audiobook is their perfect form. The fact Dark Starshas a differnt narrator than installments one and two thre me for a chapter or two but it turns out I love them both equally. Absolutely faultless and hats off to author and narrators for managing to keep such a large and disparate cast of characters discrete and interesting.

Excellent gender balance too - most appreciated!

shame

great book but it is such a shame that they changed the narrator. he didn't do the characters justice especially Lilly.

Change of narrator

Great third episode in the thief taker series. It took a while to get used to the new narrator but still a great performance. Brilliantly written with lovely historic detail.

Review

I miss the original narrator. His voice was perfect for the role. The current one is a bit more monotone.

A great read.

I can't wait for his next book, if it is anything like his first three it will be a bloody good read.

Good story.

Didn’t like the change in narrative. He wasn’t as good as the previous one I’m afraid which made following an excellent story quite difficult.

Frivolous Restoration Romp.

Would you try another book written by C. S. Quinn or narrated by Steve West?

No.

What could C. S. Quinn have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

A kernal of a good story ruined by preposterous female sidekick and clumsy sex scenes.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Steve West?

All the baddies spoke with deliberate, gruff voices (audible equivalent of twiddling the moustache).

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Yes. I can see why C S Quinn's books are popular.
