I’ve read several books about forensic psychiatry recently and this is one of the best. It’s a really interesting mix of case studies alongside relevant psychiatry history. The author is likeable and honest. I would also recommend ‘the Devil you know’ (Dr Gwen Adshead) as another great forensic psychiatry read

The individual analysis was very interesting however I found sometimes there was a lot of ramblings of long words which turned off my brain!

I liked the case histories, I thought it was a good way to order the book. The author, clearly very knowledgeable in his field of expertise, went off on too many tangents. At times it was hard to follow and there were parts where I actually wondered what he was talking about. As an ex mental health professional I normally enjoy books like this so was disappointed.

As a mental health nurse, I listen to (and read) a lot of books about the the mind, the brain, mental illnesses and so on. I want to know and understand what lies behind patients I encounter. I find that having a better understanding increases my empathy which is vital to build the relationships necessary to aid recovery.

I found the book, the content good, it covered a range of different forensic presentations, describing how the individual behaved, linking to historical cases and explaining how this linked to legal system. If I'm honest I would have liked a bit more analysis as to why patient's present in such ways, what happens in the brain to cause such diversion to the so called norm, creating the dangerous behaviour, but that's just my personal preference.

The case studies were interesting and understandable to lay people. I did at times get confused from the jump from the case study to historical evidence, back to case study, although I think this is due to it being the audio version.

The big downfall was the performance. The reader put strange emphasis on words so It became VEry distracting to LISten to. There were also LOng, unnatural BREaks between SENtences....

This is unfortunate as it massively distracted from the content and made me want to switch off. If not for having such an interest in this area, i.e. if I had been reading this for pleasure and not work, I would have switched off by about chapter 4.
