Summary

An all-consuming tale of psychological suspense with a spectacular twist, inspired by Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None

From Alice Feeney, the internationally bestselling author of His and Hers, soon to be a major TV series produced by Jessica Chastain.

'Clever, compelling, confounding and absolutely delicious' – Lisa Jewell, bestselling author of
None of This is True

'I devoured this in record time because I had to know what happened next. Alice Feeney is one of my absolute favourites' – Samantha Downing, author of
My Lovely Wife

Isolated on their private island in Cornwall, the Darker family have come together for the first time in over a decade. When the tide comes in, they'll be cut off from the rest of the world for eight hours. When the tide goes back out, nothing will ever be the same again. Nothing – because one of the family is a killer...

As the leaves of autumn fall, Daisy Darker arrives at her grandmother’s house for eightieth birthday celebrations. Seaglass, the Darker’s ancestral home, is a crumbling Cornish house perched upon its own tiny private island.

Every member of the family has their secrets. Nana, alone for so long. Daisy's absent father, Frank. Her cold-hearted mother, Nancy. Her siblings, Rose and Lily, and her niece, Trixie, full of questions and without a father of her own. Daisy has never had an easy relationship with her family, but some secrets are much darker than others. This will be a gathering that some of them won't remember.

'I was on the edge of my seat the whole time' – Taylor Jenkins Reid, author of Daisy Jones and the Six

Critic reviews

"Wow! Echoes of Christie's And Then There Were None but turned into something wonderfully original and wrapped in a genuinely creepy dysfunctional family fairy tale of a novel, this takes Feeney to the next level. Loved it!" (Sarah Pinborough, author of number one best-selling Behind Her Eyes)

"Clever, sinister, claustrophobic, beguiling and utterly compelling. I was totally hooked from the first sentence." (Peter James)

"So many nasty secrets. And that's before the bodies start to pile up! I've always been an Alice Feeney fan—but I think she's outdone herself with this startling murderfest!" (R.L. Stine)

A twist you'll never guess!

I started off enjoying the story, then I got a little annoyed with Daisy's childish, annoying character and kind of wanted it to hurry up as I was convinced I'd worked out the twist, and it was not a good one. However, when the twist came, I was very pleasantly surprised. I would never have guessed it. The end made up for the "meh" of the middle, and it became clear why Daisy had been so annoying throughout. Worth a listen.

Unpredictable and unputdownable.

Beautifully written leaving the reader in suspense. Not my usual choice of book but chosen by my book club and I’m so pleased it was.

Atmospheric Halloween surprises

There was never going to be a happy ending, and despite enjoying it immensely throughout, I was hoping for a happier ending twist

Wow

That really was truly amazing, one of the best ones I have listened too so far, will defiantly be readying more from this author and also I really liked the narrator, brilliant fit. And I am not going to lie I had one tear run down my face at the end of this.

Shockingly surprising

I read/listened to this book within one very long day, starting on a late Saturday morning, and finishing it in the very early hours of Sunday, 4am. It is a heart-breaking story about a heart-broken girl. Each chapter unveils slowly more and more of the so-well-named Darker family’s secrets, reaching a few consecutive shocking and unexpected final twists. The story is like a brewing storm which develops into raging, crashing swirl of thunders, right above our heads. Beautiful language, laconic but to the point. Well read.
