Pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1899, Cuore di tenebra trae lo spunto da un viaggio di Conrad al comando di un battello lungo il corso del fiume Congo. Nel romanzo, Marlowe racconta il suo viaggio, tra gli orrori del colonialismo, che culmina nell’incontro con l’enigmatico Kurtz. Francis Ford Coppola si è ispirato a questo romanzo per il film Apocalypse Now. "Cuore di tenebra è certo destinato, in primo luogo all’ascolto" scrive Maria Antonietta Saracino, che ha pensato questa traduzione "per assecondare il ritmo della voce che parla".
