About this listen

We had been there for over 12 hours. The man was still 30 feet up a tree, balancing on a branch directly over one of the main railway lines out of one of the busiest train stations in the country. He refused to talk to us, threatening to jump if we came too close. To him, we were the enemy. My job was to preserve his life.

The most dangerous time in any negotiation is when you think you’re winning.

From kidnappings to terrorist incidents, violent armed stand-offs to talking someone back from the ledge: all these make up the day-to-day life of Nicky Perfect’s job as a crisis and hostage negotiator.

One of the first on the scene in situations that most would run from, Nicky is deployed to defuse the most volatile and fraught situations imaginable.

After a decade on the frontlines, confronting the extremes of human behaviour, these are the stories and cases that have shaped a career spent on high alert, where life often hangs in the balance. It’s about finding yourself and following your passion, and of a life lived to help others.

This book was hard to put down! Really shows an insight into how women have had to navigate and still battle to progress in a career that has many ‘hold ups’ in women officers trying to climb the career ladder.

Very captivating

I was hooked from the first sentence. A beautifully narrated set of insightful stories, taking us through Nicky’s early career to being an extremely experienced senior hostage and crisis negotiator; up until the present day.
Written in an emotionally intelligent and endearing way, and written from the heart.
We can all learn lessons from this. Loved it!

An intriguing and fascinating listen.

Fascinating and eye opening

Insightful and interesting read. I believe negotiation training, (at an appropriate level) should be taught in senior schools. It may go along way to help teenagers help their peers, when in difficult and stressful situations.

That ambition and self evaluation can take you ultimately to where you need to be in life.

Wow. What a ride this story is. We live and breathe Nicky's world, sometimes you can almost smell it. The description of the life of a negotiator is full of humility and the constant hunger to learn from others. The fact that someone puts themselves in these dangerous and traumatic situations is nothing short of heroic. Thankyou, you are an outstanding woman.

Could not stop listening (ironically)

I like factual books and it was interesting to hear the inside story of this lady’s very interesting career. She also narrated her book and her voice was easy to listen to and clearly heard.
