About this listen

The compelling stand-alone novel from the Sunday Times best-selling author of Unseen and Criminal.

1970s Atlanta: A time of great change and yet for many the fierce desire to keep things exactly the same is still strong. For women like Maggie Lawson and Kate Murphy every day is a battle. From different sides of the tracks they are united in their determination to be good cops. But they have to fight the prejudice of people like Maggie's uncle Terry who are convinced a woman's place is in the home. And all this in a city where 10 cops are killed a year and most of the city is a no-go area - even for their male colleagues. Then Jimmy's partner is shot dead and Maggie and Kate find themselves caught up in a case that forces them to make choices. Choices that have far reaching consequences - for them, for the police force, and for the community as a whole.

fantastic story with interesting characters. Voice is very American which some people may not like. i thought she was excellent with good characterisation. Recommended.

I have not been a reader for some years so have no real knowledge of authors or their reputations. Karin Slaughter is a really great writer of suspense. I listened every night and had to restrict myself to just one hour per session or I would just have never got any sleep. Well worth the price and I will look out for others by her.

Suspenseful!

I have read or l listened to all of Karin Slaughters work, except this, until now. I put it off because it just didn’t appeal to me for some reason. I’m glad I’ve listened now and I did enjoy it. It was predictable in character behaviour given the history of the 70’s (and sadly, for many, little has changed), but it was entertaining though not my favourite from her extensive catalogue.

Better than expected

It took a wee while to get it straight just who was who with the characters were but once things cleared this story hooks you in especially with the narrator who has a voice like honey.
It takes place in 1970s America there's a cop killer on the loose and two young female rookie police officers try to unravel the mystery against the odds made harder given all the prejudices of the time.
This was my first Karin Slaughter it won't be my last - totally acceptable - next one please.

Lapped it up

Cop Town does not focus on the characters we would normally find in a Karin Slaughter book. However, it is based in Atlanta in the late 60's ( early 70's?) when equality and diversity were not even thought about.

Someone is killing Cops! The story follows a new recruit in her first week as she untangles the culture and characters of her new job.

I have had this book for quiet a while and put off reading it because it was outside my expected parameters for Karin Slaughter. I made a mistake.

Great book that once started I found difficult to put down!

Interesting book that keeps you guessing.

Where does Cop Town rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I admit I haven't finished the book yet but wanted to get the message out that this book is as fantastic as a slasher slaughter fan could wish for despite being a bit different. I am totally hooked - as usual. So far it's up there with the best

What was one of the most memorable moments of Cop Town?

The pacing, the aggravating characters some of whom you can't help but love, the GRIPPING storyline

What about Lorelei King’s performance did you like?

The last Slaughter book I listened to was narrated by someone else. Thank goodness. Lore lei is back, she has the perfect tone and characterisation

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I remember the casual open sexism in this book, younger people wanting authentic vintage could do worse than listen to this story, it is painfully, pinpoint accurate to time and really atmospheric.

Any additional comments?

As a stand alone or new series, no need to read earlier books first, dive in. Warning high probability of addiction to Slaughter with this (and other) book(s) by this cracking writer .

Different but as good as ever

I'm a long-time Slaughter fan, but this one just didn't do it for me. Too much casual male violence from accepting women. It's set in the 70s so attitudes were different then, but I never witnessed anything like this level of abuse. As for the male cops attitude to female cops..yes, I'll concede it probably was this bad, but this along with the domestic violence was too much of a stretch for me. I felt the story content was sacrificed just so Slaughter could throw another punch at a woman. She's written much better than this.

Not to her usual standard
