About this listen

Two of the most famous contributors to the Conan legend present the official novel of Conan the Barbarian, the seminal fantasy film written by John Milius and Oliver Stone.

In the novel by L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter, the Cimmerian youth Conan witnesses the death of his parents at the hands of Thulsa Doom, a priest of Set. Enslaved, he is trained as a gladiator. Gaining his freedom he allies with Subotai, a Hyrkanian archer, and a skilled swordswoman thief named Valeria. Together they raid the Tower of the Serpent, and then Conan breaks away to seek the cult of Doom—and revenge on the sorcerer who leads it.

Absolutely Brilliant!

If you are a huge fan of the original movie, then you will absolutely love this audiobook version, it goes into so much detail and elaborates on sections that the film glosses over. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Unyielding Brilliance

Conan the Barbarian: The Official Motion Picture by the late L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter showcases the talents of two seasoned authors who were once guardians of Conan’s literary legacy. De Camp and Carter were well known for their extensive work in continuing Robert E. Howard’s Conan tales; finishing and extending many of them, and bringing a deep understanding of the Cimmerian hero’s character and world. Together, they translate Conan’s raw intensity into a novelisation that stays true to the original spirit while expanding on elements not fully realised on screen.

What sets this apart is its ability to delve into moments and concepts that the film either brushed over or omitted entirely. Among the most intriguing additions are the Neanderthal-like beastmen, ancient remnants of a more primal age, who bring an eerie sense of lost civilisations and savagery. These creatures, while not present in the movie, are vividly described in the novelisation, adding layers of depth to Conan’s brutal world. The novel also explores Conan’s inner monologues, offering glimpses into his cunning mind and stoic philosophy, providing readers with a richer character study.

The pacing of the audiobook strikes a balance between the action-packed sequences and the quieter moments that flesh out Conan’s complex nature. While the film prioritised spectacle, the novelisation allows for a more intimate exploration of the barbarian’s world, filled with mysticism, ancient ruins, and battles against not only men but the very forces of an untamed world along with his compainions Subotai, Valeria, and Akiro the wizard.

For fans of the books, this is an excellent adventure, wonderfully crafted so that it stays true to the source material. For fans of the movie, this offers an essential companion piece that deepens the lore, bringing to life aspects that could not be fully captured on film. It stands as a testament to the skill of de Camp and Carter, both masters of the genre, and to the enduring power of Conan’s legend. You will never watch the '82 movie in the same way again!
