To everyone else, Terri White appeared to be living the dream, named one of Folio's Top Women in US Media and accruing further awards for the magazines she was editing. In reality, she was rapidly skidding towards a mental health crisis that would land her in a locked psychiatric ward as her past caught up with her.

As well as growing up in a household in poverty, Terri endured sexual and physical abuse at the hands of a number of her mother's partners. Her success defied all expectations, but the greater the disparity between her outer achievements and inner demons, the more she struggled to hold everything together.

as someone that's not read much on these topics I found this book eye opening, raw, honest, profound, harrowing... all that stuff. all with enough life in it to not be daunting. highly recommended

I was hooked all the way through. intact I completed the book on two sittings. it's compelling, heart wrenching and blunt. I felt like it ended so abruptly. I wanted to hear about her recovery, meeting her husband and having her baby. hopefully she'll release another book that shows that journey too.

When I heard that Terri was bringing out her memoirs I was super excited but haven’t had much chance to read since out baby arrived less than 3 months ago.

Then I remembered- AUDIBLE! I’m so glad it’s on here and just devoured it in one day during a combination of walks with the bairn.

The story is honest in a way that I was unexpecting. I thought it would just be about her rise to editor of the worlds biggest film magazine. Chapters 1 and 2 taught me not to assume, and had me hooked. Strap in folks.

I have to be honest and say that I already admired Terri White before I read this book.

That hasn’t changed.

If anything I have gained even more admiration and respect for her.

This book is a incredibly honest and courageous account of the difficulties Terri has suffered in her life and her journey to try and overcome them. It is both inspiring and enlightening.

It is however not for the faint hearted as it contains very graphic descriptions of abuse, self harm and mental illness.

I would recommend this book to anyone who has struggled with mental health issues but also to people who have not but would like to gain some understanding as to the difficulties a person can encounter.

A courageous book. Written with wholehearted honesty by a courageous and inspiring woman.

At times very hard to read, this story is so important for all of us to hear. Terri's raw honesty feels painful but it has purpose. Essential reading, especially for all those in power and making decisions about survivors of abuse.

I downloaded this book after listening to Terris podcast .
Her story is fascinating and heart wrenching. I felt I was living her life with her throughout this book. I was totally captivated , I didn't want it to end and would love a follow up book

It's somewhat unforgiving to review someone's life experiences with negativity, especially when those experiences have been full of hardships and personal comments from tormentors. This book rather frustrated me. It didn't strike me as particularly well written, especially for an editor. There is constant repetition which along with a very flat narration becomes a very difficult listen. The tone is asking the reader to disbelieve her circumstance at every turn. She is no doubt owed a huge debt for her hardships, but as a reader I just found her too taxing.

I'd love to hear more accounts like this. We are owed more truthful stories of personal anguish and torment - especially those fragile topics of childhood sexual abuse. I'll be on the lookout for further reading.
