Summary
Humanity's greatest minds have been gathering in small groups and vanishing. Special Agent Shaman Esker and his team are investigating the New England site of this latest mass disappearance littered, as they always are, with impossibly advanced but quickly-dissolving technology.
This time, though, he discovers a clue that sends him to the National Institutes of Mental Health where he meets a very peculiar doctor and her special patient. There, he hears a story of True Humans and Cattle and monstrous Families, and an ancient god that created them all a hundred thousand years ago. 3000 miles away in the Pacific Northwest, two sisters - members of one of these Families - struggle to understand who and what they are.
Elder sister tries to live up to Family doctrine but does not understand it and is also far too compassionate to even be a member of the hyper-intelligent, carnivorous brood, while her science-minded sibling denies her heritage outright. Their failures to live up to Tradition and Duty will bring them face-to-face with the god of all Families, Nyarlathotep.
