About this listen

A woman on the run . . .

Grace came to Longtooth, Alaska, looking for a safe place to hide. All she wanted was to keep her head down, do her job, and enjoy the peace and quiet. But there's no peace to be found once she meets Longtooth's cantankerous bush pilot. Caleb Kinoyit is surly and rude and mean. He's also, unfortunately, the most attractive man Grace has ever met. And as the long, Alaskan winter nights stretch on, she finds herself warming to his rough charm just as much as she's falling for the beauty of her new home.

A town with a secret . . .

There's something different about Longtooth—something the locals won't talk about with outsiders. And Grace is definitely an outsider. But when her dangerous past finally tracks her down, Longtooth can't keep its secrets from her any longer, and the revelation upends the world as she knows it. The only truth she can be sure of are her feelings for Caleb. But will that be enough to save her, or will she have to sacrifice herself to save the ones she loves?

Contains mature themes.

Grace finds herself moving to a small town in Alaska only accessible via plane during the winter months to take a teaching job she hopes means she has escaped her stalker ex. Caleb is the local ornery pilot who flies her into town and immediately takes a dislike to her, and she can't figure out why. As time passes Grace starts to realise there is more to the townspeople than first meets the eye and when the threat of her ex looms over her once again it plunges her into a world she thought was nothing but stories and legends.

The setting was stark, but that felt deliberate to coincide with Grace's character. It felt like the way the setting was described was a mirror of where Grace was mentally and emotionally. The pacing was slow for the first 70ish% but again that felt deliberate, it is told in third person and only from Grace's POV and there were definitely moments i think this story would have benefited from having Calebs POV too as the romance aspect of the story and the connection between them wasn't at compelling, believable or fleshed out as it needed to be for me to be invested and it felt a tad rushed when it did happen. I wanted to know more about Grace’s ex and their time together. Even at the end, I didn’t see him as evil. He was cold, obsessed, and didn't want to let Grace go... but I would have liked more detail surrounding him and their time together, etc. I guess I need more creep factor and more complexity to really fear him.

Overall, I enjoyed this read. It was entertaining with a sprinkling of spice, and I liked the bit with the knitting supplies as it made me chuckle, and Natalie Dukes narration was spot on as always. 🌶🌶
