Code Name Verity is a compelling, emotionally rich story with universal themes of friendship and loyalty, heroism and bravery. Two young women from totally different backgrounds are thrown together during World War II: one a working-class girl from Manchester, the other a Scottish aristocrat, one a pilot, the other a wireless operator. Yet whenever their paths cross, they complement each other perfectly and before long become devoted friends. But then a vital mission goes wrong, and one of the friends has to bail out of a faulty plane over France. She is captured by the Gestapo and becomes a prisoner of war. The story begins in Verity's own words, as she writes her account for her captors.

I loved this book. The story was great and the narration was perfect. One of the best books I’ve listened to.

I was a little unsure in the beginning where this book was going, but soon all was revealed. The narrators for Maddy and Julie really brought the performance to life, it showed true friendship, heroism and life during the war, including Julies time at the Gestapo torture chateau in France.
What I do love about this book, is the fact that its written about the unsung women who did very male roles during WW2. Women who were pilots, interrogators, spies and other secret service operators, who are sadly often forgotten, as they can never talk about what really happened during that time, due to the official secrets act.

A wonderful narrative, as if listening to two amazing women telling their own stories, sharing their emotions, demonstrating how “the thing to do” is true courage , and both of them had it in abundance.

It was a gripping story told in voices that were always convincing

I thought it stood alone though many other books have been written about the lives of undercover agents, for example Charlotte Gray, but this was told from a very different, personal perspective

It made me smile and feel sad and shocked in equal parts

I love the way the narrative was told by the two protagonists. The structure was quite challenging with first person narrative turning into third person story-telling in the first part but it worked very well. Gut wrenching and moving. Excellent researched and beautifully written.

I have LOVED this story. What a beautiful, touching and gently written book. I admit I shed a few years in the end, testimony to both the author and narrator's talents. Bravo.

Absorbing, challenging, different

Blackout & All Clear - the same excellent storytelling and strong female characters.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

That would give the plot away, but I can say, when the pieces of the puzzle fell into place.

Both - but mostly cry as it's quite a harrowing story

The narrator was fantastic - really captured the different characters extremely well. It's very unusual to have a story with so many female characters that doesn't lose it's way having them focus of men - none of that here. The writer captures their characters in a rounded way and concentrates on the events that move the plot forward. Amazing book - one of those you think about when it's finished.

I really enjoyed this book, with several unexpected twists. It was well narrated. It provided an interesting insight as to some women's roles in the war.

I normally choose thrillers and detective novels, so wasn’t sure about choosing this, but it was recommended by a friend so I gave it a try. I wasn’t sure at first, thinking it was a bit of a slow start and maybe not for me. I’m so glad I didn’t give up though ... I was soon well and truly hooked and by the end really didn’t want it to end! An absolutely brilliant book ... probably one of the best I’ve read! I just loved it!!!

A very good story, and the first narrator is simply amazing. The talent is indescribable. Unfortunately the second narrator almost had me not finishing the book. Everything is said with a smirk in her tone, it's so not in keeping with what the character is actually going through. Nevertheless, if you don't mind her narration then the story itself is wonderful and has great twists and turns.
