What if everything we’ve been told about addiction is wrong? One of Johann Hari’s earliest memories is of trying to wake up one of his relatives and not being able to. As he grew older, he realised there was addiction in his family. Confused, he set out on a three-year, thirty-thousand mile journey to discover what really causes addiction – and how to solve it.
Told through a series of gripping human stories, this book was the basis of a TED talk and animation that have been viewed more than twenty million times. It has transformed the global debate about addiction.

a stunning insight.
what a beautiful book. Giving an account of all aspects of the war on drugs. So many issues that once seemed impossible to change people's perspective on. Yet slowly individuals courage to speak out and try and see things from a different view. Give hope for the future.
We all deserve to feel loved and no one human being is an exception to this rule. I hope with all my heart. my children's children's children one day get to live in a world where love and tolerance of one another brings a downfall to war in drugs.
amazing book.

Shockingly simple
Incredible stories from history of power, tragedy, and disconnection that drives addictions, and the war on drugs.
Maybe it is actually a war on humanity, commonly driven by those perversely also addicted and themselves traumatised and disconnected.
There is hope, but less so via persecution and the encouragement of cartels. A powerful read that should be part of mainstream education.

Neutral, Non- convincing/taking sides, shocking
If you ever want to talk drug policy with me, my new requirement is that you have read this book. The seemingly never ending debates and discussions about drug policy is full of shitt. Thanks for bringing the facts about this war to the table. Forever grateful. Thank you. - Olivia

Fantastic. Please focus on the spirit of the book
I see some busy bodies busy chasing Johann for his past sins. He’s atoned.
Now, this book is stupendous. Nothing new, because we all know of each of the bits in this book. But to put it into a compelling tour de force narrative is superb.
It’s actually helped me more and allowed me to develop even deeper curiosity and compassion with my own inner addicted parts and with others’ too.
Lots of love from London, “Bad Boy” Pete

Eye-opening, Thor poking and an absolute must read/listen for everyone
I really wasn’t sure what to expect with this book, I think, perhaps I was looking for an answer to my own personal addiction (which have to be exercise and self loathing it seems…)
It took me awhile to settle into the book, and I wasn’t overly convinced initially with the strong focus on the backstory of Billie Holiday, etc… But what it gave me is a deeper insight to they real life of people who have been affected by something Beyond my own tiny little world.
Stick with the book!
The benefit of the initial chapters was overwhelming. The detail that the author goes into is phenomenal, and gives you so much perspective. I’ve read many of this authors works, and I am continually amazed by their dedication to seeking the truth, from all angles.
The book is read in such a way that it keeps you engaged, there is no monotone here. The beauty that the author is, in fact, the narrator, adds a deeper level of connection I believe.
Honestly, you will not be disappointed with this Work. 10 out of 10.

Excellent
I find Johann Hari to be a compelling narrator of his own work. This book was enlightening, emotional and upsetting to be honest. Why oh why is the horror of the drugs war allowed to continue in the current day? The solution is out there, yet the alternative remains the status quo. Thought provoking

Such a diverse and honest range of observations
I can’t get enough of Johann’s brilliant, unbiased, books investigating very real life situations. His open approach allows the reader to appreciate view points from a range of perspectives.
Addiction is so wide and varied and affects so many in a multitude of ways and it’s refreshing to gain so much understanding in a beautifully spoken and comprehensive way.
A must read for anyone who knows, loves someone with or lives with addiction themselves.
Can’t recommend this and all Johanns books enough!
