About this listen

A funny, small-town lesbian romance about clashing cultures and daring to dream big.

LA-based English indie filmmaker Alex Levitin reluctantly takes a job in New Zealand to save the "worst movie ever", Shezan: Mistress of the Forest. Things might go easier for her if she didn't almost run over the standoffish, beautiful local cop on her first day in town. And it'd really help if her film set wasn't being mysteriously sabotaged.

When Ika Whenu's Senior Constable Sam Keegan isn't trying to stamp out a motorcycle gang drug problem afflicting her town, she's publicly slamming everything about the exploitative film, Shezan, and the Hollywood blow-ins making it. That includes its nerdy, cute director, Alex, who has woeful driving skills to go with her smart mouth.

Against the stunning scenery and chaotic film-set backdrop, attraction flares between the two warring women as they're forced to work together to find the set saboteur.

Contains mature themes.

Good listen, sweet and funny.

I missed Angela Dawe’s narration very much, this narrator is good but feel there’s so much more put into the character’s in a book when Angela reads them, she’s the ultimate I think. I did adore the inclusion of Bess and Summer from ‘Breaking Character’ and even the Elena Bartel name drop (The Brutal Truth) , Queen of ice queen’s and so far my favourite Lee Winter book, thanks Lee, that was wonderful!

Save your money & read the ebook instead!

I can't give an indepth review about this audiobook, as I couldn't finish it. Which, I suppose could speak volumes. I really like the story & have bought the ebook to finish it, but I can't abide the dreadful performance of the narrator.

I loved Alex in Breaking Character & was exciting to get to know her more. However, the narrator of this audiobook is absolutely dreadful. I was prepared to give her a fair shot, as I know anyone trying to fill Angela Dawe's shoes would fail. However, Claire Alain can't even seem to do a believable British accent, which for a story about a British director is a big problem. Her portrayal of Bess was laughable & Alex actually sounded South African at certain points. I can't keep listening to this audiobook, as the narration is actually ruining the story.

Save your money & read the ebook instead.

GREAT!

This is a slow burn romance that is witty, funny, loving, clever, and just plain beautiful. It portrayed the characters in depth emotions and followed them to the HEA and how small town families and friends deal with life changes. It is simply beautifully written and excellently narrated.
I recommend this audio book. 👌

A spin off of Breaking Character

I was surprised that I enjoyed this as much as I did. Not to denigrate Lee Winter in any way - I just doubted I would enjoy anything else as much as Breaking Character (my favourite of Lee Winter’s). However, it was a pleasure to listen to a spin-off, even though I couldn’t quite convince myself that Alex, Skye, Chloe, Summer and especially Elizabeth’s voices sounded right after the sultry tones of Angela Dawes reading Breaking Character.
As for the story itself - as usual well-written and entertaining, which meant I listened late into the night. I really enjoyed the mix and depth of characters and personalities and at times found myself chuckling and smiling to myself, or alternatively sucking in a breath with widened eyes.
I now want to see the Shezan film and visit New Zealand.

Insight into NZ

I did like the cultural references to New Zeeland, that was refreshing.
I also liked the adopted family element.

should have come across so much better

I mostly enjoyed the story. Liked the mentions from other stories.

The stereotyping of British accents and culture was a big disappointment though. Pretty cringy at some points.

Fabulous

Loved the fabulous writing. Loved all the different rich and varied plot lines. Loved the variety of characters and all their different stories. Loved that the landscape is like another character in the story. Loved the narrator's sensitive delivery. Loved that the story is free from qu€€r culture and tran§ politics when so many writers who claim to write saphic romance shove these things down our throats these days, Loved that it is full of diversity without selling out women, lesbians or gay men and that it is a lovely traditional romance without power dynamics or kinky $ex stuff. Thank you Lee Winters you are a breath of fresh air, and a star⭐

Changing the voice.

I always enjoy reading and listening to Lee's books. Only one downside who has abducted Bess. Shame her voice was so different, otherwise I loved the narration.

unfortunately not a good read.

unfortunately I spent more time rewinding this book to work who was saying what to whom than enjoying this read. There was no connection between the 2 main characters at all, little to no emotional support and the whole romance was none existent. So bad I'm considering returning this read straight away. A real shame as I was really looking forward to this book.
