Summary

"I will show you fear in a handful of dust." ~T.S. Eliot

When Just Cause hero Orb is murdered using a new kind of nanotechnology, Mustang Sally will stop at nothing to find and bring to justice his killer. Not even her longtime mentor Juice's dismissal from his position as team leader can distract Sally from her mission.

A sensational new parahuman named Champion brings old-fashioned morals back to the world, training others to follow in his footsteps and heralding the onset of a new age of heroism. But Champion isn't all that he seems, and there is a sinister side to his organization. To find Orb's killer and uncover the motive for his murder, Sally must risk everything that makes her a hero.

Champion is the sixth novel in the popular Just Cause Universe superhero fiction series.

Expands the just cause universe nicely

This series of books continues to expand the just cause universe in interesting ways, adding new characters and new situations that add more depth to it as a whole. At the same time it still manages to be accessible to somebody if this was the first book in the series they had read, albeit they would obviously benefit from a stronger connection to the characters if they have read or listened to others in the series.

Mustang Sally is again the lead character, this time it is concerned with her dealings with the titular superhero Champion who has just burst onto the season, but might not be all he seems. At the same time it takes an interesting look into the issues encountered by a lesser known hero team and what they have to deal with compared with the well-backed just cause.

The narrator gave a good performance overall, with the character dialogue being a particular strength with them having suitably distinctive tones throughout.

Overall, a very enjoyable listen that would be fine for anyone new to the series or those who have already listened to others before this one, which works out particularly well since book 5 isn't on audible and the next one released after this one was book 14.

Champion book

Wow, I really enjoyed this book. This is book six in the series and we are back following Mustang Sally, who has quickly developed into my favourite super hero. With so many characters from previous books making appearances I would recommend that you read or listen to the other books. Not because you need too to enjoy this book but they are so much my fun that why wouldn't you? I really like the new characters and hope we will be seeing them again, especially the computer girl. . The author has branched his super hero's out from the normal kind of powers like strength, speed and flight and the series is worth giving a go just to see what he comes up with next. This book is less about punching the bad guys in saving the world action scenes (although there is still plenty of that) and is more investigation and under cover work, super hero style.
There is a new super hero in town, Champion and he is opening up his own headquarters to rival Just Cause. It is open to anyone with powers and with the Young Guns lending there support to his team he might just do it. Juice is worried with no information on the masked hero just what that might mean for super hero's everywhere. At the same time a former class member of Mustang Sally, Orb, dies in his lab. He was working on something that might have cost him his life but nobody knows what. Orb could control four Orb's that were more like pets than machines but something has interfered with there memory banks and Sally must seek out help from a new type of source, if she hopes to find out who killed him and why there seems to be a connection to Champion. Sally will have to go under cover because if one of the Young Guns recognise her then she will never get close enough to Champion to find out what he is really up to because there is no way he is creating a super hero team for the good of the world and while there she might just discover the reason behind Orb's death.
This is a different narrator to the first couple of books and it took me a while to get use to the different voice and on the whole she did a good job but a few of the characters sounded totally different and I will have to get use to them.

Great fun

Enjoyed this story. Sally has come a long way in 3 years. Now she is starting to get leadership skills. New friends in this book, and old ones, and plenty of old sad memories lead Sally to make a deal she may well later regret. I can understand her motives though. This wasnt as laugh out loud funny as previous books but did not disappoint.
