About this listen

My ex’s brother is officially off-limits. Right? He’s ten years older. He’s only in town for a few weeks. And did I mention he’s my ex-boyfriend’s brother? But when I agree to be the grumpy lumberjack’s temporary assistant, it gets harder and harder to resist him. He’s all beard, broad shoulders, and growls, but I savor every one of his rare smiles.

I’m so close to the fresh start I’ve been working toward for so long, but while I’m ready to leave behind the moose, the lumberjacks, and the crazy small-town gossip, I can’t stay away from Owen. We’re tasked with cleaning up a disaster in order for his family to move on from their painful past, and we can only succeed if we trust one another. Our late nights, road trips, and inside jokes bring us too close and make it difficult to stay away. And while on a business trip, we don’t just cross the line, we demolish it. We’ve both been burned by the small-town rumor mill, so we agree to keep things quiet. But secrets don’t keep in Lovewell for long, and it’s only a matter of time before we get caught in the act. We’re headed in different directions and living different lives. And no matter how badly I want him, he can never truly be mine.

Author’s Note: Caught in the Axe is a standalone small-town romance featuring a nerdy, grumpy lumberjack with a heart of gold hidden under his flannel shirt and a sunshine ex-beauty queen who loves to challenge him. If you enjoy flirty banter, wood chopping, moose shenanigans, and possessive mountain men, then take a trip to Lovewell and meet the Maine Lumberjacks.

Series Blurb: Welcome to Lovewell, Maine, where the moose outnumber the people and you can’t swing an axe without hitting a hot, grumpy lumberjack. The Maine Lumberjacks Series are ALL standalones but are most fun when read in order!

I love Daphne Elliot, she writes fun stories with laughter and love. This one has my heart, and here is why. Lumberjack. Yes, that is all I needed to begin the listen, and I am so glad I did. Owen works in Boston, leaving his hometown and not looking back. He loves his brothers, so when he was called home to help with the family business he was completely on board. the job turned out to be much bigger than expected, so he hired Lila. At the time, he didn't realize she was his brother Cole's ex, but her work ethic and brains had him keeping her. OK, it was more than that. He was attracted to her. Lila is getting ready for school, waiting on hearing for scholarships to make a decision where she will be going, but this job is a perfect because it's temporary. Now the fun begins. Lila's sunshine is coming through in spades, along with her incredible intellect which is hugely attractive to Owen. He has no interest in a relationship right? Lila is on a mission, following her dream, but dreams can change. Obstacles, family, secret meetings, it's all there, with a bit of spice and a lot of warmth and passion. I was laughing, loving the banter between brothers, empathetic to their problem and falling hard for the couple. This is fantastic start to the series and I can't wait to see what Daphne Elliot has in store next.

Aiden Snow plays the perfect grumpy nerd. His voice holds all the nuance to make Owen and his brothers incredible, giving each a personality that matches them perfectly. Mollie Stark comes out with all her brightness, giving Lila that feel of optimism, but also lets her intelligence shine through too. I loved these two, and their duet narration. It made a fantastic listen.

This is the first book in the Maine Lumberjacks series, a small town romance. Owen and Lila's story off-limits romance is beautifully written, sweet, fun, entertaining, passionate, and engaging. Lila is beautiful, smart, and kind. Owen is handsome, grumpy and possessive. They are opposites attract, and they complement each other. This is a great grumpy/sunshine romance. I liked the banter, and the slow burn romance. The supporting characters are great. Aiden Snow and Mollie Stark did a great job bringing these characters and this story to life. I enjoyed it. Looking forward to listening to Pain in the Axe, the next book in the series.

Her friends call him a “corporate lumberjack”. Lol why was that so accurate!

Owen leaves his life in the city to temporarily move back to his hometown to help his brother with the sale of his family’s business after some shady business dealings when their dad ran the company. He has so much work ahead of him and so his brother hires him an assistant… queue Lila. Except Owen and Lila seem to have a connection and they’re definitely attracted to each other. What makes it more complicated is the fact that Lila’s ex is one of Owen’s brothers. What more could go wrong?

This was such a great read. I really loved both Owen and Lila. I especially loved seeing their friendship grow and blossom as they got closer, and then it turned romantic. Owen was so sweet, I just loved how much he did for her, all he cared about was her happiness.

“Because I don’t want you to be cold. Or hungry or tired. I care about you. And if I can make your life easier, even in the smallest of ways, then I’ll do it. Every time.”

Woow just woow! I also love how he was so supportive of her goals in life and did not want to hold her back. Just pure perfection! As for Lila, I loved how smart and strong she was. Her determination to pursue her dreams was inspiring.

And what a lovely coincidence that I just started the MOMCOM series last week, not even realising that it was connected and in the same universe as this book. So seeing characters from that series show up here was a nice surprise and has me excited to continue on in that series.

Overall this was a great and entertaining read. My only slight critique is that I felt like there was a little too much business talk lol.

The narration was done in duet style by Aiden Snow and Mollie Stark. They were both just pure perfection!

This was such a wonderful story.
I love the chemistry between Owen & Lila. They really bring out the best in each other, and are both wary of starting anything with each other. I love that they have so much fun together, but are also productive, Owen wants to let her star shine, not fun her brightness to fit into a box.
This was such an uplifting story, I love how unexpectedly and hard they both fell. I really enjoyed that Owen was able to mend some broken brotherly bonds, and his family really came together.
This was full of fun, flirting, banter, laughter, spice, & family.
I can’t wait to see what happens next.
