About this listen

Haley McWaid never gave her parents a moment's worry. Until one morning, her mother wakes to find that her 17-year-old daughter didn't come home the night before.

The community is stunned by her loss. Three months pass without a word, and everyone assumes the worst.

Wendy Tynes is a reporter on a mission: to identify and bring down sexual predators. Her latest target is a social worker known as a friend to troubled teens.

But Wendy soon realises she can't trust her own instincts - or the motives of the people around her - and that this story is more twisted than she could have imagined....

Well I can pretty much sum up the dialogue as the first 80% of the book repeated :
"we need to talk X"
"No I've got nothing to say"
"we need to talk Y"
"no I don't want to"
"you need to talk to me Z"
"no I've got nothing to say"
repeat above about 40 times for the first few hours of book and you get the gist! Why the editor didn't pick this up is just lazy!

Other parts verged on ridiculous- like the lawyer who just endlessly abuses and ridicules law enforcement and the police who never get to ask the suspect a single question. The lawyer gives her take on everything. even the "reveal" with the mirror is completely implausible.
One of his weakest books.

Didn't seem like a Harlan Coben book?

A really good story, so many twists and turns but kept you hooked right the end.

Excellent

When I first started to listen to this book I didn't think I would like the slow pace. After the original introduction of the characters, and setting the scene, it got very exciting. People being accused of things they didn't do, and the Police and a journalist trying to sort out the truth. There's an amazing twist at the end, so stick with it got a short while at the beginning, I'm glad I did. Vert well narrated.

Slow start, but gets going quickly

Would have made a good short story but this was dragged out for too long. The narrator's performance is awful, the voices they put on for various characters just grating and painful to listen to - and for some reason the lead character is bordering on laughter throughout.

Rough going

Sometimes a narrator is so annoying that you cant concentrate on the story properly. This was my experience with this book. I spent half the time thinking "I could do much better than this!"

I couldnt get on with the narrator.

I'm a big Harlen Coben fan, but I was dissappointed with this one. The plot is hard to follow at times, and lacks the edgy twists and turns that is the usual Coben style. The narrator is also quite irritating and one character in particular gave me a headache! Sadly an undercurrent of sexism also which other reviews have mentioned. Definitely not as strong as the brilliant Bolatar series!

Great author but not one of my favourites. Story was similar to an interview throughout rather than action sequences which I usually enjoy from his work

Not one of his best

HC is never obvious. Always keeps you guessing until the end. WIth great characters that you'll love.

Great book.... twists and turns till then end.

The narrator's voice was grating, sarcastic, screamy, often all at once. I struggled through (on my second try) as I like Harlan Coben books. Maybe someone needs to come up with software to muffle people like her. How she got the job, I cannot fathom. I felt relieved to get to the end.

Awful voice, but the book was quite good

Great sorry, love Harlan Coben books, thought I’d try an audible as I’ve no time to read just now. Absolutely gutted by the narration. Read as if it’s a teen story with giggly voices and often incorrectly accented making the whole meaning of the sentence change. Often just stopped as couldn’t continue listening to it so will need to now buy the book to find out what’s happened and try to erase the rubbish characters I’ve already imagined as a result of terrible reading. Real shame, will be checking future audible books for who narrates and reviews.

Read it rather than listen to it
