About this listen

Mental prayer is a type of prayer that has traditionally been used by Catholics to draw closer to God by meditating on various aspects of the faith, such as heaven, the shortness of life, in addition to stories and parables in the Bible, and even simply contemplating on the face of Christ. St. Teresa of Ávila defines mental prayer as "nothing else than a close sharing between friends; it means taking time frequently to be alone with him who we know loves us."

The form is different than vocal prayer, which uses set forms of prayer, such as the psalms, the rosary, and hymns. In this short catechism, Fr. Joseph Simler gives an introduction to the practice in a simple question and answer format, moving from defining what mental prayer is, to dealing with difficulties such as distraction and aridity. A classic work that will help anybody grow closer to Christ.
