I love Victoria Hislop’s books, however, I was slightly disappointed in this one.

Postcards arrive, addressed to a name that Ellie doesn’t know, with no return address, each signed with an initial: A. They brighten her life. However, after six months, they stop.

Ellie decides that she must see the place for herself & as she leaves for Athens, a notebook arrives. She snatches it up & takes it with her.

The notebook tells of a young man’s, presumably A’s, journey through Greece.

Of course, one weak point in the book, in my opinion, the two meet.

It was better on a second listen!

I love Victoria Hislop, but this book I struggled with, I tried the audio version and the book and couldn't get to grips with either.
Such a shame as I've loved all her other books. This one just wasn't for me.

A lovely story beautifully told. I've never visited the Peloponnese and this has been a delightful introduction. Other parts of Anthony's travels were familiar to me. An engaging and engrossing book for everyone.

I suspect that if I'd read this I would not have enjoyed it so much but it was brought to life, for me, by the reader.

Some readers/listeners have suggested that this is a random selection of short stories linked by a tenuous thread or a travelogue enticing one to Greece.
I don't agree. I felt very connected to the emotions of both man and girl. They are decent, intelligent, sentient human beings with deep, undemonstrative emotions. Victoria Hislop made their own stories interesting.
Also I was, almost always, captivated by the tales told along the way - some were shocking.
A lovely satisfying, believable ending.

Having really enjoyed Victoria Hislop's previous novels, I was a little disappointed in this book. It felt more like anthology of short stories read by a variety of narrators none of whom really gave an engaging performance other than Dan Stevens. I'm not a particular fan of short stories - I prefer something that you can get your teeth into, so alas this was not the book for me.
