About this listen

From the author of Mayflies, an irresistible, unputdownable, state-of-the-nation novel - the story of one man's epic fall from grace.
May 2021. London.

Campbell Flynn - art historian and celebrity intellectual - is entering the empire of middle age. Fuelled by an appetite for admiration and the finer things, controversy and novelty, he doesn't take people half as seriously as they take themselves. Which will prove the first of his huge mistakes.

The second? Milo Manghasa, his beguiling and provocative student. Milo inhabits a more precarious world, has experiences and ideas which excite his teacher. He also has a plan.

Over the course of an incendiary year, a web of crimes and secrets and scandals will be revealed, and Campbell Flynn may not be able to protect himself from the shattering exposure of all his privilege really involves. But then, he always knew: when his life came tumbling down, it would occur in public.

'A brilliant state-of-the-nation novel that pulls down the facades of high society, and knocks over the 'good liberal' house-of-cards. O'Hagan is not only a peerless chronicler of our times, but has other gifts - of generosity, humour and tenderness - which make this novel an utter joy to read.' Monica Ali

One of the best books I’ve read this year

A wonderful story, beautifully written, memorable characters and up to the minute issues brought to life with originality, humour and sadness too. Amazing.

A world I will continue to think about for a long time

Wow, Andrew O’Hagan is magnificent, this book is the most epic and soul destroying piece of literature I have read in a long time. How is it possible to craft such an intricate and realistic world of parallel lives? Will recommend everyone to read this phenomenal book. Unreal narration too

First Andrew O'Hagan

A most thought provoking listen. I galloped through, binge listening in order to find out what was going to happen to the characters. so enjoyable I've bought Mayflies to read.

Breathtaking!

Caledonian Road takes you through the lives of a diverse cast of characters, giving us a snap shot of society today politically and socially. It highlights privilege, poverty, predjudice, stereotyping and takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions. Plus the narrator is outstanding!

Amazing novel

I loved this . Maybe even more than the book I loved the tour de force narration. There is a trend now to employ 2 or 3 simpering narrators to cover all angles but Michael Abubakar can do any voice or accent. I was blown away. The book is almost Dickensian in its scope with only the comedy missing. There is however caustic observation and a wonderful plot.

Panoramic view of a society in decline

It was a slow starter, but it picked up as it went along. The main protagonist is deeply unsympathetic, which is the main flaw of the book, but after a bit you really want to know what happens to all the large cast of characters. I enjoyed it.

Enjoyable

Very enjoyable! It's not my usual type of book, hence why I haven't given it 5 stars.

The Narration is sensationally good

This is an ambitious novel. The narrator of this audiobook is very gifted. What impressed me most was the writer’s ear for so many registers of contemporary speech. The dialogue is wonderful and occasionally wickedly funny. He is a keen observer of pretension and the posturing of entitled people. The patois of black bros infused with American rap which would be hard for me to imitate well but the narrator is extraordinarily good at rendering every character vividly. He does a subtle Danish inflected English, Glaswegian, Irish, Black London, Russian, Polish, Patrician and many other perfect male and female and gay intonations.
The reading is among the best I’ve ever heard in hundreds of audiobooks. He also conveys the emotions of the characters movingly without exaggeration . The story is complex and conveys the precarious state of a London that is fractured, selfish and decadent.
