Summary
Funerary rituals show us what people thought about mortality; how they felt about loss; what they believed came next. From Roman cremations and graveside feasts, to deviant burials with heads rearranged, from richly furnished Anglo Saxon graves to the first Christian burial grounds in Wales, Buried provides an alternative history of the first millennium in Britain.
As she did with her pre-history of Britain in Ancestors, Professor Alice Roberts combines archaeological finds with cutting-edge DNA research and written history to shed fresh light on how people lived: by examining the stories of the dead.

Fascinating and engaging
I really enjoyed this book, and the Professor's narration. It's full of historical facts and quite reasonable suppositions, and each burial is discussed in a wider context of its location and period.
I share the Professor's eagerness to see the results coming from the "Thousand Ancient Genome" project, and what it will show us about the history of the population of the British Isles.

Interesting facts and theories about our island people
Some of the chapters were a bit gruesome for non- medical listeners but I found the whole book an experience not to be missed with much thought-provoking aspects. Well read!

"All things change and pass away."
As one of the team in the early days of uncovering the Roman style Palace at Fishbourne in the early 1960s, I recall the constantly revised theories as it's size and splendour were revealed. How fascinating to hear how much archaeology has changed since then, increasing our knowledge about the discoveries but still leaving so much open for speculation.
Fascinating book, especially the early chapters, a tad rambling in places but additional pleasure can be taken from listening to Alice Roberts' long list of Gaelic place names. Pity there are no illustrations

An excellent walk through history.
I know very little of the time period covered by this book and so it has been like a bright light shone into those areas. I appreciated what seemed to me to be the thoroughness with which it was covered as well as how the information was hung on the topics covered.
I enjoyed the authors narration (with the hint of accent). The contextual notes were important and I identified with the thoughts expressed.
As this is the latest book written I will now go back and listen to the others.
Thank for your book.
Kind Regards, Andrew Redman.

So interesting. Told with understandable analysis, explanation and humour. I am really enthused and am going to read her previous books to find out more.
