About this listen

Newly adapted for audiobook listeners.

As organizations shift from monolithic applications to smaller, self-contained microservices, distributed systems have become more fine-grained. But developing these new systems brings its own host of problems. This expanded second edition takes a holistic view of topics that you need to consider when building, managing, and scaling microservices architectures.

Through clear examples and practical advice, author Sam Newman gives everyone from architects and developers to testers and IT operators a firm grounding in the concepts. You'll dive into the latest solutions for modeling, integrating, testing, deploying, and monitoring your own autonomous services. Real-world cases reveal how organizations today manage to get the most out of these architectures.

Microservices technologies continue to move quickly. This book brings you up to speed.

  • Get new information on user interfaces, container orchestration, and serverless
  • Align system design with your organization's goals
  • Explore options for integrating a service with your system
  • Understand how to independently deploy microservices
  • Examine the complexities of testing and monitoring distributed services
  • Manage security with expanded content around user-to-service and service-to-service models

Great foundation for understanding what micro services are all about covering every thinkable aspect of them

General guidelines and important things to consider were excellent. The later part of the book was a lot of repetition of previous chapters, which I liked less.

Superb update to all allay great book

The second edition brings forth years of learning and incorporates more modern thinking (e.g. team topologies, observability) alongside what feels like consistently and thoroughly posted content throughout the rest of the book.

The definitive resource on microservices.

Great deep dive into microservices

I learnt a lot listening to this book and it brought together a lot of concepts I had come across and heard mentioned over recent years into clearer detail. The narrator does a good job also.

Massive improvement on the first edition

I read the first edition just over a year and a half ago and already by then it was pretty dated. Sam Newman has put a lot of work into updating this, it’s pretty much a new book.

Best audiobook on the topic of microservices

An excellent book, well adapted to audio. Very few technology specific discussions and a really broad coverage of topics, seemingly only strongly opinionated when it matters. Highly recommended to audiobook listeners who want to dive into this specific domain.

Excellent resource

I'm working on a micro service project that (after reading this book) I now know breaks one of the basic tenants of micro services - independent deployability. This book addresses many of the real world issues we are currently facing.

Many technical books don't translate well into audio format but this is an exception.
