Summary

Following a gruelling operation in Paris, Liz Carlyle’s bosses post her to MI5’s counter-espionage desk, but they haven’t counted on the fallout from Putin’s incursions into the Ukraine. Liz needs to track down a Russian spy who has entered the UK before he completes his fatal mission. Meanwhile, the intelligence services are in the spotlight. In response to the debate raging around privacy and security, they hire Jasminder Kapoor, a controversial civil rights lawyer, to explain the issues to the public. But in this new world of shadowy motives and secret identities, Jasminder must be extra-careful about whom she can trust.

Critic reviews

"Liz Carlyle is an MI5 agent with the traditional thriller-heroine mix of dysfunctional personal life and steely ambition." ( Daily Telegraph)
"This is something rare: the spy novel that prizes authenticity over fabrication that is true to the character and spirit of intelligence work." ( Mail on Sunday)

Engaging and fascinating

Much better than the first in the series which is worth reading first because it gives background to the characters. I found the story so interesting especially in the light of the current war in Ukraine. I plan to read the next book soon.

Prescient

This would all sound far fetched.... If it weren't written by Stella Rimington.... And if I weren't listening to it during Putin's war in Ukraine.

Excellent, very entertaining.

Really enjoyed my first Stella Rimington, definately not my last.
The characters were very believable and the story moved on at a good pace.
Some of the narrators accents were a bit dodgy, but I enjoyed the characterisation.
Looking forwards to listening to the next story by the author.

Yet again, poor choice of narrator

I wonder if producers really understand how much a narrator can bring to a book? They should, but the often poor choice of narrator seems to go against this obvious truth. I think the story is good, although rather plodding at times, but the narrator really kills it - not in a good way. Her different voices are very poor and I really don't expect a professional not to know how to pronounce "volte face", for example. I'm afraid I couldn't recommend this audiobook, wholly because of the narrator.

Undoubtedly one of the best books in this series

Whether it is because I have now listened to all the available audio books in this series, so know all the main characters intimately, or Stella's writing skills have progressed with time, this book is, without a shadow of a doubt, the best in the series so far.

As always, the book can be divided into 2 parts. The first part builds the atmosphere, characters, location and the plot. The 2nd ties it all together to an finale filled with twists and plots.

The book had me laughing, crying, sympathetic and annoyed.

As has been the case in this series, the book is based around Liz Carlyle an intelligence agency operative, her junior, Peggy and a brand new bharacter for this book, Jasminder Kapoor.

Very well written, with lots of detail, that allows the listener to build a picture in their own mind. I listened to this book every morning and every evening. It's definitely one which I will re-read again in the future.

Brilliant!

Loved it. One of her best. Sad ending. Felt like I was getting real insight into life in the services.

Unnecessarily Sad

I don't understand how a female author, who is unquestionably a strong woman herself, can pen strong female characters and then have them act against type thus acting annoyingly weak and unimaginatively!

This was a great story spoiled by two women performing against type. Unless the lesson is that women become weak when in love. Which I don't buy into. I would have expected better resolutions and outcomes.

Simpler and less satisfying than the rest of the s

Thought this one was slight compared with the best in the series but I love the character development and how the lives of the key players move on. Dreading finishing the last one on audible and why have the 1st 3 been removed?

Weak plot

This is the first Stella Remington novel that I have not been really gripped by, most of the others have been tense and exciting but I fear this was written too quickly without a full raft of ideas, although I would not recommend this I would most of the others. Ash

Not your best work Ms. Rimington sadly
I am of thr opinion you have hurried this one along too quickly it did not hqv3 any depth... There was definitely a good story to be told here but as I stated earlier hurried.... Sorry as I am a fan of the previous work..
