The era is Napoleonic and the novel, both in its historical scope and psychological subtlety, Tolstoyan. In its portrayal of conflict and fierce ethnic loyalties, the story is also eerily relevant. Ottoman viziers, French consuls, and Austrian plenipotentiaries are consumed by an endless game of diplomacy and double-dealing: expansive and courtly face-to-face, brooding and scheming behind closed doors. As they have for centuries, the Bosnians themselves observe and endure the machinations of greater powers that vie, futilely, to absorb them. Ivo Andric's masterwork is imbued with the richness and complexity of a region that has brought so much tragedy to our century and known so little peace.

Really pleased that this book has been available on audiobooks and well read by Helen Lloyd as I would find it too strenuous to read it by myself. The language of Andrić is rich and he clearly spent a lot of energy to research the period he set his novel into. The only criticism I would have is the incorrect pronunciation of German names of some of the characters which irritated me for a long time until I got used to it. Also there were some passages that could have been shorter but all in all very rewarding experience.

Gorgeous I loved it and would recommend it . Set in Bosnia at the time of Napoleon when it was ruled by the Ottoman Empire. It is full of beautifully drawn characters that will surely stay with you.

supremely mega brilliant book, good english translation. this is a very accurate historical account of the region, as relevant for the balkan powder keg today as in the Napoleonic times, which is describing. unrivalled literary psychological description of human feelings, ills, needs, wants, desires, manipulations, deeds, misdeeds.....

Loved the descriptions, which made me feel I was there. This book deals with the period in time and the geographical location in a beautiful and unique way. The listener is aware of the global political struggles going on, but the book does not deal as such with the war or battles but rather deals with the way of life and the people. Not what we call a page turner but more of a very gentle stroll on a warm spring day. A most enjoyable book by Ivo Andric and well narrated by Helen Lloyd. I recommend this book.
