Somehow sadder…

Well, actually, once you listen to it, you’ll know what I mean. As with all of these, the loose ends are all neatly tied off at the end, but it’s actually a much sadder, darker story than hitherto, with some difficult issues tackled and resolved, probably not in a way that you’d expect would satisfy Carole (in particular), but which Jude would probably tell you provided the best outcomes realistically achievable. And, as ever, extremely well narrated. Wimpishly, I’m hoping the next one will be a bit jollier…

Not my favourite

Once again it was great to visit Feathering and meet up with two of my favourite lady sleuths, Carol and Jude. I have thoroughly enjoyed all the books in this series so far and I did enjoy this one too but.........
I hadn't expected the slightly darker subject matter which was not easy to drift off to sleep with and I didn't really feel that I learnt anything more about Carol or Jude. The gradual unfolding of their past lives and revealing of their personalities are things that really draw me to this series.
However, I look forward with pleasure to the next story.

Grim and Uncomfortable

I'm a huge fan of this book series, but this is the first time I've felt uncomfortable with the subject matter and very unsatisfactory conclusion of the two characters who are "involved". It's still a 5 star book, but I finished it feeling annoyed.

Psychologically astute with good plot structures

After Henry was a brilliant series and had a witty, dry take on the relationships between grandmother, daughter and granddaughter. For this reason I chose to listen to the Fethering series. In all honesty, I ordered them as a sleeping draught so I could fall asleep to a single voice narration. It worked, but in the process, I’d later have to backtrack to listen as the main characters were well drawn, the plots fun (albeit with many dark moments), and the cast of characters delicious. My favourite set of fruitcakes was the Lock family in Death under the Dryer. I’d say that Brett’s talents as a clever plotter of gentle crime stories, his reading voice and his ability to delineate characters are brilliant. He’s like a cross between E F Benson, Agatha Christie and Trollope. These novels have got me through two lockdowns and the challenge of winter evenings. I’d recommend anything written by Brett by now. Brett, Miles Jupp and John Finnamore have been the best Covid-era companions you could wish for.

I now it's fiction but...!

Overall the story was ok but how the child pornography was dealt with left me confused, would a woman like Carol, having a small grandchild, be willing to let someone off so lightly who admitted to obtaining it, and especially the man who was copying it, surely both are crimes and not victimless. I enjoy these stories but this left me cold.
