About this listen

The vaunted power of the Mage’s College. Unbounded freedom among the Wolfmen. The best of both worlds.

Recent college grad Sam King was hoping for a backpacking trip across Europe as a graduation present. Instead, he’s going to get a different kind of trip: a three-month stint in the ultimate immersive gaming experience. As a lifelong geek, gamer, and outsider, it’s a better gift then he’d ever dreamed.

But when he jumps feetfirst into the world of Eternium, run by CAL (the Certified Altruistic Lexicon), it’s not exactly what he expected. All he wants is to quest, game, grind some levels, and get his hands on awesome loot. You know, have fun! But the Mage’s College seems to have a very different definition of fun - one involving study, blisteringly strict regulations, aristocratic hierarchy, and tons of pay to play.

Sam crosses the college and finds himself running for his life with a back-talking book that is far more than it seems and a class that no one has even heard of. If he can navigate the deadly college politics and the looming war with the barbaric Wolfmen, he might just find the fun and adventure he was looking for.

Enjoyed it. Lots of game mechanics in it if that’s your thing. Looking forward to next one.

Good fun

It ties in to the events in the main series without an overlap of characters interacting which helps build out the world

I like how it ties into the other books

Compelling story, good depth with regards to world building, and sets up future storytelling lines set within this universe.

Unique

A great collaboration although it does take a while to get into things and im a bit surprised at this.
The world building is good although im not sure if the game mechanics would ever allow for how things are at the start which was a little dubious but the characters and the action when it does work is very good.
This is the first in the series however and it shows a lot of promise especially towards the latter half.
Bill is great however and the narration of him by Podehl is spot on which more than makes up for the little niggles.
I requested this audio and have decided to leave my thoughts.

Shaky at start to a strong finish

I was a little skeptical about this one due to it not being purely Dakota’s work but I loved it. Dakota fast became one of my top two writers when I first heard Dungeon Born (I only listen as terrible dyslexia). I have bought every audible release and loved the lot. I was a little worried I would not like this one due to the unknown (to me) writer and I was pleasantly surprised. I would have thought it was written just by Dakota himself if it wasn’t for the name on the cover art so well done to James. He really captured the essence of the world Dakota has been creating all this time and has added a very good mix of interesting characters that I hope to hear more about in future titles. The right amount of humour and snark from the protagonist/s and a well paced development makes this book an easy listen. I will be listening to all the Mountaindale press books again (some for the 5th time) in order of release and will not feel I have completed my mission if I left this one out as it is definitely one of the Eternium family. Thanks for your excellent writing.
Also the voice acting was brilliant but I don’t really have to say that as I’m sure everyone thinks Nick podehl is awesome.

More Eternium and loving it
