About this listen

Behind the Wheel Chinese Level 1 covers beginning to intermediate level Mandarin, providing a flexible, solid and universal foundation in speaking, understanding, and creatively expressing yourself in Mandarin Chinese. An easy-to-understand companion book is provided in phonetic Pinyin, a system of representing Chinese using the English alphabet. This allows the learner to practice Mandarin quickly and easily without the frustration of learning to read Chinese characters. Chinese Level 1 features both a English and native Mandarin Chinese speaking instructors.

Critic reviews

“The audio-only lessons build upon one another, using a native speaker to help you learn useful words and actually construct sentences from the get-go.” —Minneapolis Star-Tribune

“Unlike other audio language programs, this series encourages students to create their own sentences, making it more fun and conversational than other more expensive programs.” —The Cleveland Plain Dealer

“Focuses on real-world conversation...Great value.” —Men's Health magazine

This is not suitable for learning. It is a series of phrases spoken in English, then Mandarin. They are unrelated, so there is no logic to the sequence. The sentences don't even start shorter. You leap straight into lengthy sentences. I couldn't remember the words by the end of the sentence, let alone pronounce them properly. There is no build-up, no explanation, just phrase after unrelated phrase. It is impossible to learn a single thing in this manner. I can't even remember '1, 2, 3' and that was the easiest one.

Totally and utterly useless and incomprehensible
