Summary

Zein and Panayoti were good friends since university, but after graduation they lost touch.

A few years later they reunite in London, and the friendship reignites. Between scientific conferences across the world, they plummet back into the bliss of youthful exploits. A flicker of either inspiration or luck leads Zein to a project that could save millions of women.

An unshakable nemesis stalks the pair along their escapades and threatens the success of the project.

In their final reunion in Egypt, they never meet as planned. Instead, Panayoti receives a phone call that will turn his world upside down and send him running across Egypt to there where he knows nowhere--behind the chair factory.

Now I understand

A magnificent stream-of-consciousness narrative that wanders between the reminiscences of an intimate friendship and a dark psychological drama that blurs the boundaries between reality and delusion. While the protagonist seeks to save his friend, we learn a lot about the turn-of-the-century Egyptian culture and language. I have always wondered why lots of things happened the way they did. That book has finally answered my questions. Thank you.
