Serena Carlow's former love now controls her future happiness.

Serena Carlow's former love now controls her future happiness.

After her father's unexpected death, Serena's jilted ex-fiancé—the Marquis of Rotherham—is made the sole trustee of her wealth and marriage prospects.

Eager for an escape, she moves to Bath and encounters her childhood sweetheart, the dashing Hector Kirkby—but will Rotherham approve the match?

Before long, they are all entangled in a confusion of marriage and manners the likes of which Regency Bath has rarely seen.

Not that impressed

I found it tricky to differentiate between the characters. Particularly the hero and heroine. It was an interesting choice not to soften the heroine's tone. She came off as spiky and uncaring... which is not counter to the text. But it could have been presented differently and it meant both hero and heroine were very unsympathetic.

Great story but poor narration

It’s a classic Georgette Heyer novel but it’s read by a woman on who the subtlety of Heyes script is lost. It is read like a rant making it stressful to listen to rather than the classic cynical amusement that makes Heyer’s novels so enjoyable. Very disappointing!

Really good! The narrator goes at a good pace and gives a true representation of the characters

Penguin short-changes Heyer again

Narrator unsuitable in some ways but mainly due to lack of guidance.. Production team has taken no care to ensure correct pronunciation of essential vocabulary. These light Regency tales of Heyer's depend on language, and manners for their entertainment value. An accurate and well-produced recording might have made all the difference.

Excellent romantic tale satisfyingly long

At first I was unsure of this narration but I advise listeners to stick with it as I was very pleased by the end. I am amazed that Heyer could think up so many plots and often funny characters to continue to charm the reader. This is up with the best.

On my shortlist of Georgette Heyer favourites

I have read this novel many times over, and enjoy the characters,
particularly Mrs Floor, who is a feisty and delightfully non aristocratic grandmother. She is a wonderful foil to all The other high born characters and almost steals The show.
The title describes the plot exactly and this story is quite a Recency romp.
The narration does the book justice and is enjoyable to listen to.

Poorly read

There is very little variance between the characters so it was difficult to be sure as to who was speaking. Once again, odd pronunciation of words.
