Summary
What does it mean to be a powerful, happy man in today's world? What does it take for a man to know himself, know his mission in life, and live a life of strength, honour and wisdom?
In Backbone, the modern man finally has a self-help audiobook worthy of his masculinity. This audiobook won't ask you to get in touch with your feminine side if you want to embrace change. It's a straight-talking, down-to-earth and funny guide to get you working with your masculinity instead of against it. Backbone combines no-nonsense wisdom with brutally honest exercises to help you to find your purpose in life; hone your emotional intelligence; and escape unhelpful beliefs, patterns and habits so that you can live an amazing, powerful, passion-filled life.
Wagner addresses the challenges that modern men typically face, asking you to join him in a series of profound self- examination exercises and questions covering life purpose, male identity, spirituality, self-limitation, sexuality, relationships, fatherhood and more. Every chapter is highly practical and includes observations and examples from David's own life journey as well as insights gained from the many clients and groups he has worked with over the years.
Learning to be a good man used to be part of our culture; sons learned from fathers, nephews learned from uncles, apprentices learned from masters. But today this rarely happens. Modern men have to figure it out by themselves.
Backbone is a practical step-by-step guide to help men know themselves deeply, root out weaknesses, enhance strengths and upgrade their experience of life. So, have you got the backbone to start your journey?

Get past the spiritual and there’s learning
Some of this has to be taken in the context of the author - AA based and spiritual. Once that is understood, there’s a lot to be gained in this book.

Great
I know the phrase I will use is a cliche by now but this book should really be on all the school curriculums. While the advice is mainly general, everyone can learn from it - and improve.

What a young man needs to hear
As a bloke in my mid 20’s, this is what I needed to hear, and have been struggling to find in those around me

Don’t waste your time
Part asinine hippy waffle part terrible generalisations with some toxic ideas sprinkled in.
The notion that you should never discuss your full emotions with your (female ofc) partner as they will think less of you as a man I regard as dangerous at best. That’s the kind of twaddle that contributes to suicide rates. The author then un ironically says men should try and relate better with women…. That’s obviously without being _too_ honest them.
Some of the other ham fisted sweeping statements around gender roles made me cringe. For example women love drama men like to talk less and come up with solutions to problems. In another memorable sentence the author says that “even” Gay men need to try to understand women.
It’s 2023 surely we can do better than this.

Such load of nonsense
Never heard such a load of waffle in all my life - Spirituality and Gawd, which is pronounced God by the way - Cannot believe anyone could benefit from this book at all except the author
