Pero no es así; se trata de un arte de carácter peculiar en el que las influencias europeas, españolas sobre todo, son utilizadas con un sentido plenamente original por tres razones fundamentales: el medio ambiente, la tradición precolombina y la intervención de la mano de obra indígena. Desde los primeros años del siglo XVI y hasta comienzos del siglo XIX el gótico, el renacimiento, el barroco y el neoclasicismo vivirán en los territorios americanos un desarrollo paralelo al de la España peninsular, si bien con peculiares características.
