About this listen

Zack Lightman is a dreamer. He fills his days with wishful thoughts of life on other planets and spends hours playing videogames, neither of which have helped him make friends or find a girlfriend. His refuge from the daily disappointments of life is Armada - an online space-fighter simulator based on defending Earth from an alien invasion. It’s when he’s playing that he feels closest to his father, a champion gamer who died when Zack was a baby.

He rises up the ranks until there’s only one other player who can challenge his worldwide supremacy. As he closes in on his ultimate enemy, the game suspiciously shuts down, leading Zack to investigate the many urban legends and myths that surround Armada. What he finds will take him beyond his wildest dreams.

The game was just the beginning....

This is another joyful nerd quest, full of cultural references that resound with me (I guess far more of a gaming nerd than I ever imagined) but probably mean nothing if you didn't play Atari or listen to music from the 70's. Basically every 15 year old gamer boys (and in my case girls) wet dream...the nerds save the world and all those hours spent with a screen were not wasted but were actually important training for the final battle with the baddies...what's not to like?? Plus as a now middle aged mum, I appreciated the mom gamer who was just as cool as the young kids...pure fantasy for the same audience as The Big Bang Theory...otherwise probably complete pants!

Just enjoy it for what it is!

Brilliant book! Earnest does it again with another amazing story! Definitely give this a go if you want a really good Sci Fi story

Outstanding

I enjoyed the story but did find it less satisfying as his previous book. Will Wheaton does a good job again at bringing the characters to life.

Good, but not as good as his first....

Brilliant, straight off the back of READY PLAYER ONE I was ready for more 80's ref culture inspired story lines, FYI it comes in spades. Loved it, 5*

Another great story read by Crusher

Where does Armada rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of my favorite audio books, The story, character and narrator exceptional

What other book might you compare Armada to, and why?

Ready Player One

What about Wil Wheaton’s performance did you like?

brings it to life

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Any additional comments?

From the beginning I was totally gripped, loved the story and some great memorable characters.

For the first two thirds of the book, I found it to be very enjoyable but just a little twee and unbelievable (I know, an alien invasion book that is believable but you get my drift....). The final third was of course when the character begins to realise that all the events are just too manufactured and that some piece of the jigsaw was missing too. So once it dawned that I'm meant to feel it's all a "little twee and unbelievable" the story became that much more enjoyable. Really enjoyed this story - its not up there with Ready Player One which is still the best story I've read for some time, but it's not that far off. A great read and definitely recommended.

...however it did not last. The mixed reviews made me hesitant, as many were comparing it to the authors first book I thought I'd give it a go and ignore comments which compared it.
However the story never seemed to get going, a lot of information and not much action. None of the plot twists were a surprise, I'd recommend if you didn't have anything else to listen to however you're not missing out if you don't buy it.

Had high hopes...

I enjoyed Armada but less than I enjoyed Ready Player One.

The cultural references are too densely packed in places - at times Cline resorts to simply listing relating properties. The characters seem unable to process anything that happens in their lives unless they've seen the situation occur a film or TV programme, making every one of them seem slightly autistic.

The action is well described and the overall idea is great - it will make every gamer feel better for the hours they've spent glued to their console.

The thing I really struggle with is the funny mix of 80's nostalgia and teen angst lit. It leaves me wondering who the target audience actually is.

Enjoyable but lacking depth
