A Beloved Classic from the Queen of the Regency Romance

A fiery debutante. An ill-tempered bachelor. A romance for the ages.

Arabella, the daughter of an impoverished country parson, dreams of a new life in London. But her beauty and charm will only get her so far - and when Arabella embarks on her first London season armed with nothing but a benevolent godmother and her own notoriously short temper, she quickly runs afoul of Robert Beaumaris.

He's the most eligible bachelor of the day, with a personality as strong and combative as hers - and Arabella cannot abide him thinking of her as just another pretty girl after his wealth. So she allows herself to be provoked into a game of deception - one that could have unexpected consequences....

Arabella is a rich, dashing romance from Georgette Heyer, the legendary creator of the beloved Regency romance genre.

Excellent

Another brilliant Heyer to charm and delight. The narrator was good except for the French pronunciation of 'Beaumaris'. It should have been the English pronunciation.

Excellent storytelling in an authentic Regency style

I really enjoyed the narrator who has a real gift of using appropriate voices for the characters with dramatic emphasis and clear diction. Very good indeed.

Another rattling great regency romance

A little slow at the start but it soon became a lovely tumbling tale. Georgette Heyer always delivers exactly as you'd want.

Very well performed, and wonderfully romantic story

Lovely delivery and depiction of characters very believable, liked the performance. Suitably predictable but very enjoyable all the same. Love Georgette Heyer for light entertainment.

Fabulous version of a great novel

One of Ms Heyer’s lighter novels which is absolutely charming. The story is gentle but has enough twists and turns to keep your interest. Arabella is a very likeable heroine. I love the dog Ulysses and how Mr Beaumaris anthropomorphically converses with him. I also absolutely loved this performance. Ms Whelan captures the tone of the book perfectly. I had to get used to the French pronunciation of Mr Beaumaris’ name, as I had always read it with a hard ‘s’ but that didn’t take away from the pleasure of the performance. I would definitely listen to a book read by this narrator again. Definitely worth your time buying!

Entertaining

One of my favourite Georgette Heyer’s. Quite well narrated marred by several mispronunciations which were irritating.

Yikes, the pronunciation!

I adore this story. Of all of Ms Heyer's books, this must rank the highest. Her characters are drawn with such a lively and deft hand, and the farce they entangle themselves into is so wittily described, that this favourite always entertains. That said, the narrator’s mispronunciation of the name of one of the principal characters, Mr Beaumaris, truly ruined this audiobook for me. How could the narrator have been permitted to present the name as if it were French? Such a disastrous choice that I suggest it would serve to ADR every instance of it, replacing it with the correct, English one.

A charming tale

Full of Miss Heyer’s erudite humour and a most enjoyable listen. Gemma Whelan does an effective and entertaining account of the story, characters and accents. Well done!

Significant pronunciation error

I have only just listened to this recording as I had a previous audiobook version available.
This is one of my favourite Heyer books and I was looking forward to the new production.
The repeated mispronunciation of 'Beaumaris' marred an otherwise excellent reading.
This has been commented on by other reviewers but I had not appreciated how annoying it would be until I listened to the whole recording
Such a stupid error which could have been prevented by a simple on-line search.

Regency Charm

Once again Gemma Whelan has brought her considerable talent as a narrator to a Georgette Heyer novel. Her clear diction, lively reading pace and understanding of the novel’s many characters combine to offer the listener a totally delightful experience. I would love to hear her narrate Bath Tangle and Black Sheep, two of my favourite Heyer novels!!
