Summary
For fans of Octavia E Butler, Margaret Atwood and Naomi Alderman, a thrilling, heart-wrenching debut novel from Karla Marie Sweet, exploring disparity of privilege, the quest for identity and the human need for connection.
When the External Womb Programme is launched, the news is controversial. Hundreds take to the streets in protest, feeling strongly that growing a baby outside of the human body is "unnatural". But thousands more people rejoice: at last, an alternative for those who wish to have children but worry about the physical toll it may take. A chance that throwing a baby-shaped grenade into one's career path might not derail it entirely.
For Lucy, whose acting career is finally taking off, the news is well worth celebrating. Could having a baby this way mean she can have it all? As she and her husband James embark on their journey, however, it becomes clear she's not being entirely honest with him and, as an old flame returns, everything is thrown into jeopardy.
Decades later, the use of external wombs is commonplace. But a corrupt government stepping into power leads to this groundbreaking piece of technology falling into the wrong hands, forcing everyone to reckon with a challenging new world and their place within it.
Performed by Erin Doherty (The Crown) and Kingsley Ben-Adir (Bob Marley: One Love), Another Life marks the arrival of a brilliant new literary talent that will thrill, entertain and challenge you from beginning to end.

first ever review and for a free listen!!
i have never felt the need to leave a review before but on this occasion i couldn't imagine not leaving one. I downloaded this as a freebie and so wasn't expecting much.
it's not what I normally choose but I thought why not, it's fairly short and even if it's meh I've not wasted any money.
by the time I reached the end I was in tears I genuinely felt like I had had the wind knocked out of me and had to take 15 minutes to pull myself together.
it is moving and clever, describes moments we all remember experiencing, is written in such a beautiful way and is terrifyingly believable. the performance of the story is absolute perfection.
I don't have the words to really explain how much I love this story. it will stay with me forever.
I will definitely be looking for more by the author and will gladly pay to read her other work.

Addictive
I could not stop listening. The story was so believable. I would have loved if it had prequels and sequels. You could really get lost in both worlds

If you liked The Handmaid's Tale
An amazing audiobook, reminded me of The Handmaid's Tale. The author is very talented, and has a way of really drawing you into the world they're creating. Some really thought-provoking questions raised. Both narrators were top notch too - one of the best things I've listened to this year..

Nice debut!
I liked this a lot. Loved how the author addressed real life issues in a unique way such as racism & how she reminded us not a single person has stepped inside a court after what happened at Grenfell. Look forward to the next book.

Dreary dystopia- making me miserable reading it…
Was getting into Luciana’s story, then we meet Omar. Here the book turns into a sort of morbid navel gazing in a brave (?) new world. The characters here have been traumatised and returned to a society they don’t understand….
And I don’t actually care. There are all sorts of parallels with our modern society, and frankly I see it on the news every day. This world is bleak and terrible enough….
I’m going to plough on to part three: no, in fact I’m not. I’m going to bale out and move on before I need counselling…..

Rather dull domestic drama
I don't often write reviews but feel I need to make potential listeners aware of a few things. This is not a sci-fi novel. It is a domestic drama with unlikeable characters who are poorly drawn. There is no real plot and throughout there is a sense of 'so what?' The characters actions are often baffling which contributes to the lack of momentum and overall lack of purpose. I'm not sure how I managed to listen to the full audiobook, but I wish I hadn't. It is a truly terrible book.
