About this listen

On the surface, Alice is exactly where she should be in life: she's just given birth to a beautiful baby girl; her ever-charming husband - an academic whose area of study is conveniently her own Mohawk culture - is nothing but supportive; and they've moved into a home in a wealthy neighborhood. But strange things have started happening. Alice finds herself hearing voices she can't explain and speaking with things that should not be talking back to her, all while her neighbors' passive aggression begins to morph into something far more threatening...

Told in Alice's raw and darkly funny voice, and infused with Native American myth and legend, And Then She Fell is a wild, fierce novel.

It's difficult to review this in a few words. Alicia Elliot is a master, that's for sure - in total control of her material. This book explores so many things - Native/Indigenous people, colonialism, academia, racism, addiction, (cultural) genocide, culture(s), motherhood, family, friends, belonging, mental health, alternate realities, spacetime. It really is that expansive! More than anything else, though, it's the voice and the writing that really stand out. Unlike anything else I've read, And Then She Fell gave me a fresh perspective on the treatment, culture, experiences and oppression of Native women in Canada - and around the world. Thought-provoking and clever, and packed full of heart and soul.

A note: this is not your standard formulaic novel. I'd describe it as literary fiction. There's first person, second person and third person narration. A couple of the hallucinatory sequences towards the end do go on a bit long. It's horrific to see how Haudenosaunee girls are objectified and seen as a curiosity and a utility by white boys and men. But – one small question – are Alice's impressions of all white women realism or another form of racism? All very clever and thought-provoking, anyway.

Searingly original and different - just wow

I have been reading Soldier Sailor and Nightbitch. As a new grandma, I found all these tales, this included, quite distressing for my young mother self and my daughter, though she is far more capable nax relaxed a parent.

But the native American storyline and the web of life possibilities for any of the indigenous characters elevated the story. The narrators were also brilliant and sounded authentic.

On balance, I loved it

A story about a young Mohawk woman who falls into a life that is filled with uncertainty and seems to have a gift for hearing and seeing things that others can't. Raising her daughter with her white academic husband, she is draw to writing the stories of her ancestors. But the past and the haunting won't stop and soon she is falling into a place of fear, not realising that help will come from the most unexpected of places. Beautiful.

Poignant, haunting and full of love
