Summary

'Extraordinary. The psychology world has found its own Adam Kay.' Dr Sophie Mort, clinical psychologist & Sunday Times bestselling author of A Manual for Being Human

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the closed door of the therapist's office? What's revealed there may surprise you.

Psychotherapist Josh Fletcher takes us on a candid and human journey into the individual sessions of four patients - Levi, Zahra, Noah and Daphne - sharing their self-discovery and recovery as they engage in therapy for the first time. And he lets us into the inner thoughts of a therapist, from shock and sympathy while in session, to how it feels to run into a former client on a messy night out.

Interspersed with straight-talking advice on common issues such as anxiety, OCD and panic attacks, as well as a therapist's guide to how to find the right therapist, And How Does That Make You Feel? is darkly funny, illuminating and full of promise that a better future is always possible.

It's everything you wanted to know about therapy (and quite a few things you probably didn't).

Hilarious, honest and helpful. Dr Alex George, Sunday Times bestselling author of The Mind Manual

'Raw and honest. It will change the way you think about and treat your own mental health.' Dr Nicole LePera, New York Times number one bestselling author of How to Do the Work

'An amazing and important book. Practical, profound, entertaining and enlightening.' Cathy Rentzenbrink, Sunday Times bestselling author of The Last Act of Love

The accuracy.

As a new therapist I really enjoyed this find it really reassuring as I could see this in myself during sessions. I recommend this witty version of ourselves to other therapists

Insightful, intense and light-hearted

A beautiful balance of serious and humour. Josh takes you on a journey, multiple journeys in fact, with informative and intense insights into therapy while managing to keep it refreshing and delicately funny.

Brilliantly written

As a former therapist, I found this book amazing, it captures the process superbly, I wish this had been around when I was still practicing. Beautifully written, brilliantly narrated and brutally honest.

Beautiful!

A really engaging book, it was fascinating to consider how both therapist and client "feel", and how I felt listening. A real mix of funny, moving, dark and relatable. Brilliant!

Touching and compassionate

Joshua Fletcher’s first book, PANICKING ABOUT PANIC, changed my life. Truly enlightening. In this book, Josh explains anxiety and its many manifestations in a methodical, logical, yet accessible, manner and provides us with the tools to shift our perception of and behaviour towards anxiety.

PRACTICAL ABOUT PANIC and UNTANGLE YOUR ANXIETY are amazing supplements to put the concepts into practice.

But, after more than 20 years of fighting anxiety alone, it was Josh’s DISORDERED podcast, co-hosted by Drew Linsata, and their army of listeners, that touched me emotionally. You listen (avidly), you relate (often), you cry (sometimes), you laugh (a lot) - and you do it anyway.

….. AND HOW DOES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL? has it all. It is simply “un-put-down-able” entertaining, and psychoeducational. Read with or without background knowledge of Josh’s work, it is a deeply touching and compassionate piece.

Josh, thank you for sharing.

Insightful, a good insight into the kind of a therapist…. With oodles of humour!

Loved that it is read by the author. Provides great reminders for qualified therapist and super insights for those in training or for anyone wondering what therapy is about and how the therapist works.
Josh’s honesty, vulnerability and use of appropriate humour make it capturing from start to finish.

A lifeline!

My doctor recommended that I read Josh’s first book. It really resonated with me and I found it far more insightful than any other book around anxiety. (I am well read!) I loved this audio book too. I think the fact that Josh reads it enhances the overall messages that he is communicating. For me, the content resonates with me because I really sense that Josh has been through hard times and come out the other side. The book is a bit like therapy itself to be honest. I have started to follow Josh on social media and have a sense of who he is and what he does. Listening to the audio book was at times like getting sound advice from a good friend! Well worth the read/listen! (I have a paper copy too!)

Funny, real and heartbreaking, all rolled in to one!

Such a brilliantly written book! The delicate way in which the clients and their presenting issues were discussed was brilliant.
As a therapist, I found it very reassuring and also very funny! It was like Joshua had seen what it’s like inside my head during sessions with my clients! I would highly recommend this book to clients and therapists alike :)
