Summary

Have you ever wondered what Japan was like long ago? The Japanese people have had a long and interesting history, filled with warrior queens, emperors, and discoveries that have changed the world. Both parents and children will enjoy learning about Ancient Japan in this fun, up-to-date history of the Japanese people. To hear more, pay attention...

Did you know that the Japanese were the first people to create pottery? That might not sound important, but there were no plates, bowls, jars, or pots before the ancient people in Japan invented all of that!

Japan had to do all its growing, inventing, and war plans from a small set of islands just off the northeast tip of China; not a lot of room! But as you’ll see, this culture believed in excellence going after big dreams - and they accomplished it all. However, there were battles, political struggles, and many secrets throughout their long history. Ready to hear about those? You will discover:

  • How people roamed these islands over 500,000 years ago!
  • How pottery started the Jōmon period
  • How a train ride in 1877 led to an important discovery
  • How rice was introduced to Japan
  • 100 Clans in 100 CE
  • The Yayoi people and what they meant to today’s Japan
  • The Old Tomb period: Kofun (yes, like “coffin”!)
  • How the Yamato Clan united all the clans
  • Why the Japanese adopted Chinese writing styles
  • Buddhism arrives!
  • Empress Genmei builds a city
  • The Pillow Book - it’s not for sleeping!
  • Some famous characters
  • Culture and Society in Japan - surprising and inspiring!

There’s so much to learn about this tiny - but strong - little nation. Jump into this audiobook and see just how powerful a small country can be.

Excellent series of history books designed with children in mind

I love this series of audiobooks narrated with content to suit the younger reader. I particularly liked the information on Shinto and Buddhism, as well as Shogun and Samurai. The book also covers Japanese mythology, such as Amaterasu hiding the sun in a cave, and not returning it until everyone acknowledged her importance. There are accounts of Japanese Art covering pottery, architecture and literature.
Quizzes are included after each chapter, helping children to focus and recall the facts they’ve learned.
