About this listen

Commissaire Adamsberg leaves Paris for a three-day conference in London. Accompanying him are Estalere, a young sergeant, and Commandant Danglard, who is terrified at the idea of travelling beneath the Channel. It is a welcome change of scenery, until a macabre and brutal case comes to the attention of their colleague Radstock from New Scotland Yard.

Just outside the gates of the baroque Highgate Cemetery a pile of shoes is found. Not so strange in itself, but the shoes contain severed feet. As Scotland Yard's investigation begins, Adamsberg and his colleagues return home and are confronted with a massacre in a suburban home. Adamsberg and Danglard are drawn in to a trail of vampires and vampire-hunters that leads them all the way to Serbia, a place where the old certainties no longer apply.

In Fred Vargas’s riveting new novel, Commissaire Adamsberg finds himself in the line of fire as never before.

Love Fed Vargas books . Her writing is so original.

Please any of you out there who have never heard of her Fred Vargas is a female French , sort of crime writer but so much more .
You never forget her quirky sometimes odd characters . I’ve read all her books but wish thet were all on Audible in English but there are only a couple available on Audible .
Give her books a try I heard about her on Radio 4 & after great reviews on A good read tried one of books & was hooked !

Nicely read but I lost interest.

well read but I lost interest in the story although I did finish it. I think maybe it was just not a story for me but others may enjoy it.

Great entertainment!

Unusual characters, clever twists, and filled with riddles, this is a good novel to take your mind off daily hassles. I enjoyed listening to this very much but be warned! You will need your focus so not a good one as background noise while you're doing other things!

The strange and intriguing novel An Uncertain Place

A novel beautifully read bringing to life the characters and places within this unusual subject matter. David Rintoul does a splendid job especially with all the foreign place names and native languages.
A thrilling narrative keeping you on the edge of your seat. Will definitely read more Fred Vargas’ works.

Hugely imaginative to say the least

Preposterous but vastly imaginative and entertaining. Couldn't quite suspend disbelief throughout, perhaps I should listen to another one to get more practice!

Superb

When Fred Vargas writes who needs to watch images on a screen. The quality of her writing takes her readers on these great journeys allowing our imagination to live the story and feel we are in the room with her characters.
And as always a wonderful translation.

Wonderful as always

Fred Vargas never disappoints.

Even though I knew who did it (listened to an audiobook ahead) I still enjoyed so much of the scene Vargas set and the character development, it didn't really matter. I enjoyed every minute of this book.

Excellent detective mystery, excellent narration.

Fred Vargas is an excellent story teller and this is an very good translation. While there are a lot of believable twists and turns it is the mystery at the heart of this book that gives it the edge over most thriller/murder novels.
