About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

After the storm, it's time for a fresh start....

The powerful and heart-stirring new novel by the Sunday Times best-selling author of Unexpected Lessons in Love.

First, the clouds...

Tara Hunter is a therapist on a mission to restore Longhampton's community spirit after catastrophic flooding. But with her boyfriend AWOL, her family fragmented and only a cat for company, Tara's own life's on rocky foundations.

Then the storm...

Dr David Dalloway is Longhampton Wellness Centre's new star counsellor. He invites pets to session. He also has a knack of reading people's minds - which is the last thing Tara needs right now.

And after the rain....

Charismatic architect Keith Hunter was last seen in Longhampton 20 years ago, when he walked out on 10-year-old Tara and her twin brother, Toby. But now he's back, with a surprising offer that could change everything. Is a bigger storm on the horizon? Or is this Tara's chance to rebuild her broken past?

I liked the story comlex and a bit strange but it had some interesting twists

Another Longhampton classic

I enjoyed the characters in the family and the storyline. It was a really lovely story.

Interesting storyline

Wow! There's a lot in this story. Many layers of detail and interesting depth too. There's a family drama, which is told in Tara's memories and past and present griefs, mingled with the plot of a thriving therapy centre including the fascinating talent of David, though I won't spoil it by saying more. While Tara and David's paths continue to cross with their on off, will they, won't they friendship, one moment they're seeming rivals, the next...

Overall it has a slightly melancholic atmosphere, with some moments of lightness, to break this up and add a much needed spoonful of honey sweetness. And I like that people's pets are quite clearly the unsung stars of the show here. The narrator brings calmness and the characters' clear voices, she reads well.

Complex and beautiful

Beautifully performed, this book touches a lot of nerves and was a nice story but I felt it wasn't my favourite Lucy Dillon book. I felt that the characters lacked depth... Still a decent read though.

Beautiful and emotive

Lovely story as expected from Lucy Dillon! A bit slow to start but stick with it. Narrator generally very good but at times sounded a little robotic.

Lovely!

Unlike previous books set in Longhampton there’s hardly any mention of previous characters. I also found the narration quite robotic, I missed hearing the familiar voice of Lucy Price Lewis.

Not as good as previous stories of Longhampton

I have really liked many of Lucy Dillon's books but this one was a disappointment. The storyline had too many strange twists, like the therapist able to read the thoughts of animals. In addition, the warm and cosy Longhampton atmosphere had somehow vanished. Hopefully this book was just a dip.
