About this listen

George Eliot's first full-length novel Adam Bede is a profound rendering of 19th century English pastoral life. This timeless story of seduction and betrayal follows the virtuous carpenter Adam Bede, whose world is soon disrupted when the all-too-beautiful Hetty betrays him for another villager. Her actions precipitate a turmoil of tragic events that shake the very foundations of their serene rural community. Eliot's gift for leisurely and lyrical prose is in full effect here and her insight into human emotion and complexity is unrivalled.

Georgina Sutton’s voices & diction bring George Eliot’s first masterpiece alive. I could not recommend more.

Great book, brilliantly read.

I did not expect quite so much preaching, and found the book rather long. The plot could well have been dealt with in half as many words. The narrator captured the mood perfectly and was adept at voicing the recognisable characters with great variety of tone and dialect.

A story of country folk in the time of John Wesley

wonderful story

I always think it is wonderful how George Elliot managers to paint vividly a critical picture of whatever time she portrays in history. In Adam Bede the story is set early in the 19th century somewhere in Yorkshire. There are some wonderful passages about pure believe and communion with something or someone bigger than ourselves in the voice of another inspiring heroine, Dina, as well as a chronicle about the false promises of progress and modernity already sensed by the author back then. Adam is a true pillar of value and valor. Another favorite passage is about the fact that characters in this story navigate in and out of grey areas. combining perfectly good character traits with fallible gestures. The author praises the importance of taking people as they are and holding our judgment. Very refreshing to see a story where the main characters are working class, real people. And they are quite enough.

Another wonderful chronicle of the times
